Job Description:Genetic counselors' function in independent practice under the supervision of the physician leader to provide patient and family counseling, research, coordination of specialized care including lab data, specimen collection, retrieval of data and referrals, consultation with other patient care specialists and referring providers. Provides staff education as needed.ScopeAs a Genetic CounselorGenetic counselor position includes seeing (approx. 9-10 per week) new patients for genetic counseling and testing. We see patients with both active cancer diagnoses as well as family histories of cancer. Many of our patients have a personal or family history of breast cancer, although we also see patients with personal/family histories of colon, pancreatic, ovarian, prostate, melanoma and other cancers, as well as patients who have a pathogenic variant in a hereditary cancer gene identified by another provider or have a family history of a hereditary cancer gene.We use Epic EMR and Progeny for pedigree-taking. We have a scheduling team who performs benefits investigations and schedules new patients. Genetic counselors are expected to manage their own case load, which includes following up on genetic test results, providing documentation to the lab when necessary, submitting prior authorizations for testing when necessary, and obtaining pertinent medical records (family members genetic test results, etc.). We also attend weekly breast and general cancer conferences with other providers (breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists), as well as attend meetings and provide data for accreditation with the Committee on Cancer and Breast Program Leadership Committee.Our sites are accredited by Coc and NAPBC.Job Details

Assesses, plans, and manages medical, psychological and social problems for a specialty patient population. Gathers diagnostic information, evaluates psychosocial and medical history, and interprets clinical/laboratory findings. Counsels patients and families regarding genetic risks, diagnostic testing, and case management. Communicates clearly with families/patients.

Maintains accurate case records with full, accurate and appropriate medical record documentation.

Performs medical/literature searches from worldwide databases. Interprets and extrapolates research found in medical literature to clinical applications. Identifies, evaluates, and administers appropriate educational materials for patients to understand complex genetic information.

Liaisons with health care professionals for inquiries and referrals. Serves as a clinical resource person and effectively shares clinical expertise with medical staff and community. Conducts formal and informal educational programs for physicians, residents, health professionals, and the general community.

Designs and implements programs, policies, and procedures within the area of human/clinical genetics. Monitors and integrates new genetic technologies, theories, and community resources. Attends continuing education necessary to maintain Certified Genetic Counselor status with the American Board of Genetic Counselling, as applicable.

Participates in quality initiatives, including patient satisfaction, patient care, and workflow.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Genetic Counselling or related field is required

Certified or Board Eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counselling or American Board of Medical Genetics is required

Two (2) years of related experience consistent with clinical rotations required by graduate degree and prior clinical genetics experience in prenatal, cancer and/or other specialty setting is required

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as an Oncology specific genetic counselor is preferred
