DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide for the care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21, who are pre-adjudicated, sentenced, or committed. The Division also contracts with numerous private residential and non-residential service providers throughout the State. For pre-adjudicated youth, the Division is also responsible for the management and oversight of Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, a State-funded, locally administered program that provides services to youth at risk of further progressing into the juvenile justice system. The purpose of this position is to manage, develop, assess, and evaluate education program components. This position develops program guidelines and standards to address the diverse needs of students at Platte Valley Youth Services Center.

The Special Education Building Coordinator provides leadership in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating special education programming across Platte Valley Youth Services Center education program in alignment with the DYS Education Strategic Plan.

The Special Education Building Coordinator supports special education teachers and paraprofessional (when applicable) in all aspects of implementation of the Special Education Process through age 21.

The Special Education Building Coordinator also supports parents, administrators, teachers, school social workers, and other professional support staff in meeting the needs of students in need of services.

Summary of Job Duties:

Follow all rules and regulations of special education law including preparing reports for state and local indicators, submitting data to the Central office, scheduling meetings, and keeping and maintaining IEP records and other documents that pertain to special education.

Facilitating Individual Education Programs (IEP) meetings using a strength based and family centered approach.

Work with school administrator(s), community organizations, and state agencies to facilitate special education programming.

Ensure IEP distribution to all staff participating in student's educational program

Serve on school data and/or MTSS team

Serve on DYS Special Education Advisory Team (SEAT) or other committees related to special education

Serve as the Local Education Agency (LEA) for all lEP meetings including referrals

Consult with special education teachers with Individual Education Program development and scheduling

Coordinating with student's special education team to ensure all documents are completed in a time manner prior to any lEP meeting. Connect with special education team to ensure all team members, including parents, are prepared for the content of the meeting.

Work with appropriate evaluators and ensure that assessments are completed in a timely manner for initials or re-evaluations.

Work with the Director of Special Education to ensure that all materials, trainings, and supports are in place for alternative assessments if needed

Consult with outside agencies to support student transitional needs

Support school administration in resolving special education student behavior needs

In consultation with school mental health professionals, develop and support the implementation of behavior plans.

Work with special education staff, outside consultants/specialists (when necessary), and school administration to provide appropriate training for stakeholders.

Coordinate with special education team to complete quarterly/ semester/trimester IEP progress reports and provide quarterly IEP progress reports to parents/guardians

Attend Multi-Disciplinary Teams as appropriate and necessary for students in special education

Maintain tracking and data systems that include: student information related to IEPs, services, service hours, evaluations, times lines in which evaluations are completed and discipline incidents documented.

Supporting the planning of special education initiatives and the implementation of the initiatives, integrating new developments, research findings and best practices into ongoing programs and new initiatives.

Establishing and maintaining communication with parents/guardians

Obtaining special education records from previous placements if necessary

Sending out requested special education documents

Scheduling and holding all special education meetings and including alt required parties

Arranging individual support for students using existing resources.

Attending alt required special education trainings as directed by the Director of Special Education

Maintaining confidentiality of student records and student information

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal RightsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & APPEAL RIGHTS:Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of education, social studies, science, math, humanities, administration, special education or a similar degree type.

Two years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

License:

A valid Professional Teacher License from the Colorado Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education

Substitution for required license:

Special Service Provider license issued by the Colorado Department of Education

No substitutions for education & experience.Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Special Education

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience writing Individual Education Programs

Knowledge and experience implementing IDEA within the school setting

Experience with implementing articulated systems and structures with fidelity

Conditions of Employment:

Must be 21 years old or older

Must have a US driver's license

Travel may be required to attend a professional development or training within the state.

Must have no felony convictions and no violent history

Full Background: CBI name check and fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, Reference Checks, Professional License verification (licensure requirements), Drug Screen, PREA (Division of Youth Services), Trails check (direct contact with children)

Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre-service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO) and mandatory annual training in all subject areas.
