Our research significantly enhances the resiliency, efficiency, and affordability of energy systems across the United States and the world.NREL’s intern program provides a diverse opportunity for students and recent graduates. In addition to mentorship and real-world, hands-on experience, students and recent graduates will participate in professional development activities that will help strengthen their technical and professional skills.The internship commitment is 15-30 hours per week during the school year (depending on intern availability) and 40 hours per week during the summer. In this internship, the student will support university student building science competition and additional workforce development programs in the building sciences.Duties may include: supporting full-time technical staff in writing technical reports, assisting in the organization of conferences and events, and developing communications to collegiate competition teams. Additional duties may include: supporting cross-functional teams in conducting thorough, high-quality research and analysis; project development and deployment; writing technical reports; and assessments of industry trends.The successful candidate will demonstrate a desire to deepen knowledge in clean energy topics. Exceptional teaming, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills as well as the ability to work independently and problem solve are also requiredBasic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year. Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution. Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a STEM-related field (Engineering, Physics, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, etc.)
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and/or other software tools
Excellent communication and teamwork skills; enjoys group problem solving and technical discussions
Ability to both collaborate with team members in a flexible work environment and work independently
High standards of work quality, detail-oriented
Intellectually curious, analytical, and tenacious in finding solutions.
Adaptable to a variety of roles and projects.
The successful applicant will be prepared to work onsite in Colorado. If the candidate needs to relocate, NREL can reimburse the candidate’s airfare or mileage to and from Colorado. A hybrid schedule (1-3 days per week in office) is acceptable.Preferred Qualifications
Experience with working with diverse stakeholders on energy- and carbon-related issues
Experience developing user-friendly, intuitive resources and tools
Experience applying engineering skills to complex energy- and carbon-related problems
Experience writing technical reports and/or academic papers
Experience working with students either through K-12 teaching, university teaching, other outreach programs, or mentoring programs.
