JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

The Town of Berthoud is looking for an experienced Project Engineer to join our Public Works team. In this role, you’ll lead capital improvement projects—ranging from park development, facility management, and trail enhancements to roadway and sidewalk construction or renovation—from initial planning and budgeting through to successful completion and beyond.

As a key contributor to our team, you’ll collaborate with consultants, engineers, and organizations to ensure every project reflects our town’s high standards and enriches the community. We’re seeking a detail-oriented professional with the ability to work in a collaborative environment and embrace the challenge of managing diverse and impactful projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following is an overview of the responsibilities for this role. Duties may change or be added as needed by the Town:

Project Management - Define project scope, prepare RFPs, manage bidding processes, oversee contracts, RFI’s, and ensure compliance with timelines and standards.

Read and Interpret Plans - Understand architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil drawings to ensure accurate execution.

Capital Improvement Planning - Collaborate with a variety of departments to develop multi-year infrastructure improvement plans including roadways, sidewalks, parks, trails and open space.

Supervision and Coordination - Oversee staff, consultants, and contractors to deliver timely and cost-effective results.

Inspections and Approvals - ensure projects are inspected, review submittals, and manage punch lists, and warranties.

Budget and Reporting - Prepare yearly budgets and manage expenditure.

Customer Service - Address public inquiries and complaints, implement resolutions, and provide updates as requested to the Town Board of Trustees.

Principles, practices, and equipment for maintenance of infrastructure and facilities.

Safety regulations, codes, and cost estimation for construction and maintenance.

Public administration, including budgeting and supervision.

Skills and Abilities:

Interpret laws, policies, and regulations; develop procedures and solve problems.

Communicate effectively and maintain cooperative relationships.

Collect/analyze data, prepare reports, and manage budgets.

Organize projects, maintain records, and ensure safe practices.

Spot inconsistencies, missing details, or conflicts between drawings, specifications, and contract documents

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Construction Administration, Civil Engineering, Public or Business Administration or a related field is required.

Professional Engineering (PE) License in Colorado or ability to obtain within a negotiated timeframe is preferred.

Work Experience:

A minimum of one year of increasingly responsible experience in capital improvement program management, project management or construction administration that includes planning, design and tracking of project expenditures. Additionally preferred in a public works setting is preferred.

Certificates and Licenses:

Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record is required
