The division includes the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response; State Public Health Laboratory; Health Equity Branch, Communicable Disease Branch; Immunization Branch; Public Health Informatics, Reporting, Technology Branch; Refugee Branch; and Operations Branch. The Division exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively prepare for, monitor, detect, diagnose, investigate, and nimbly respond to all types of conditions, events and disasters that impact the public’s health.The Unit:The Chemistry provides accurate scientific data and test results in regards to organic and inorganic compounds/metabolites in a variety of clinical and environmental matrices. Data generated by this work unit are used in timely support of state and national environmental, safety, and public health programs and rapid response to chemical terrorism events.What you will be doing: The position performs supervised routine scientific sample preparation analyses following established procedures. Preparing samples and specimens for organic and inorganic method analysis and conducts testing to support environmental programs. This position is responsible for maintaining lab equipment and ensuring that samples are handled, processed and discarded following established procedures and regulatory guidelines and that prescribed quality assurance standards are maintained. All testing results generated by this position must be reviewed and approved by the senior staff prior to release.Organic and Inorganic Sample Preparation and Analysis

Organic and inorganic sample preparation of water, food, environmental or clinical matrices and other testing as requested by the Chemistry Supervisor or Program Manager.

Following current Division Quality and Safety manuals and specific method standard operating procedures this position prepares samples for analysis involving grinding, weighing, mixing, measuring and transferring.

Maintains sufficient reagents and consumable supplies to complete the analysis, standardizes new reagents.

Keeps measurement devices in proper condition for measurement, keeps primary standards and lot numbers current, observes initial QC checks to warrant a continuation of the analytical batch preparation.

Equipment and Instrumentation

Operates basic laboratory equipment and instrumentation including meters, monitoring devices, grinders, mixers or analytical instrumentation following associated standard operation procedures and safety guidelines.

Documents equipment issues in equipment logbook and asks for supervisory assistance with the evaluation and troubleshooting of equipment operational problems.

General Laboratory Administrative

Assists with and is assigned permanent duties related to the transfer and check-in of samples and transport from the accessioning area to the chemistry laboratory, inventory of supplies, daily recording of refrigerator and freezer temperatures, preparation of sample bottles, cleaning of laboratory bench top areas and equipment, disposal of samples, following laboratory safety protocol, required QC procedures and standard operating procedures.

Assists with customer support by phone and email related to water testing and must have a knowledge of the testing the laboratory provides. In response to customer phone or email inquiry’s it may be necessary to seek the assistance of more experienced staff prior to ensure to correct information is provided. Coordination with accessioning staff is frequently required to track customer sample inquiries.

Operates and calibrates analytical gravimetric instrumentation and equipment utilizing current method, instrument or equipment standard operating procedures.

Ensures laboratory is properly cleaned and staged for analyses before after the procedures.

Maintains required documentation related to sample weighing batches and completes final reporting. Ships tared filters to sampling sites and receives filters for final gross weighing and reporting to clients
