A Millwork Apprentice isan entry-level position where an individual learns the fundamental
skills of woodworking and machinery operation under the guidance of experienced millworkers,
assisting with tasks like cutting lumber, assembling components, preparing materials, and
performing basic maintenance, while gaining proficiency in reading blueprints, utilizing power
tools safely, and adhering to quality standards to eventually become a skilled millworker.
Key Responsibilities:
Basic Woodworking Tasks:
o Cutting lumber to specified dimensions using power saws and hand tools.
o Performing basic joinery techniques like rabbeting, dadoing, and tenoning.
o Operating the glue rack.
o Sanding and finishing wood surfaces.
o Learning to operate basic woodworking machinerylike table saws, band saws,
jointer, planer and Milling machine under supervision.
o Maintaining cleanliness and safety around machinery.
o Interpreting basic blueprints and project plans to understand dimensions and
layout.
o Measuring and marking materials accuratelybased on blueprint specifications.
o Lifting and transporting lumber and materialsto the work area.
o Organizing and maintaining inventory of materials.
o Adhering to all safety protocols including proper use of personal protective
equipment (PPE).
Skills and Qualifications:
o Physical Ability:Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and
work in various positions.
o Basic Math Skills:Understanding of fractions, decimals, and measurements.
o Attention to Detail:Ability to follow instructions and maintain quality standards.
o Learning Agility:Willingness to learn new techniques and adapt to changing
project requirements.
o Good work ethic and attitude.
Progression:
As skills develop, the person hired for this possession will progress to more complex
tasks and eventually become fully qualified millworker.
