Description of JobThis position provides overall supervision and direction for the Behavioral Health Programs, which includes general mental health and substance use disorder treatment services, at Centennial Correctional Facility . This position is accountable for planning, directing, and maintaining delivery of mental health services, assuring compliance with mental health guidelines, and managing appropriate use of resources through direct supervision of and working with the first level supervisors. This position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Supervises, organizes, reviews, and evaluates the work of all behavioral health staff;

Covers general mental health, substance use treatment and sex offense specific treatment;

Recommends hiring and corrective action of assigned staff;

Maintains the standard of care for the clinical program or work unit assigned;

Payroll entry;

Solves problems for day-to-day behavioral health operations of the assigned unit or program;

Serves as the interface between the behavioral health programs or unit and Clinical Services administration, other CDOC departments, other facilities, and outside agencies;

Facilitates communication within the unit to assure staff receive clear accurate and congruent information on a consistent basis;

Generates reports that are objective and contain pertinent data;

Investigates, interviews, and synthesizes information pertaining to conflict resolution;

Resolves offender grievances whenever possible;

Acts as a consultant and provides training to facility, community, and state service providers on issues related to treating incarcerated offenders diagnosed with mental illness or other special needs as identified;

Works with Mental Health clinicians to apply treatment plans with a full range of professional services to the offender population, to include formal and informal mental health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interviews;

Ensures accurate mental health needs levels, including Psychiatric and Developmental Disability levels into the DOC Information System;

Provides group, brief, and individual therapy, and crisis intervention to include participation in 24-hour Mental Health On-Call rotation;

Ensures both emergency and non-emergency transfer for offenders experiencing acute mental health needs;

Provides clinical direction to non-clinical staff regarding mental health care and treatment of offenders;

Ensures continuity of care for offenders from a holistic DOC systems perspective;

Implements action to maximize the quality of patient care delivered by directing and coordinating the timely reporting of statistical and quality assessment data;

Serves as a resource for all standards including ACA and NCCHC and is responsible for the behavioral health components of accreditation;

Formulates and implements policies and procedures essential to promoting quality care;

Ensures staff compliance with all Life Safety policies and procedures;

Applicant must possess a valid, active license from the State of Colorado as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist or Licensed Psychologist.

Applicant must have one (1) year of licensed experience providing direct behavioral health treatment.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of supervisory experience over professional behavioral health staff. Supervision is exercising span and control over subordinate staff to include coaching, mentoring, daily monitoring, performance management (planning, reviewing and evaluating), resolving complaints/grievances at the informal level, responsibility for scheduling and leave approval, and providing input that could affect pay, status, or tenure.

Combination of experience in mental health, substance use disorder, and sex offender treatment counseling.

Experience in managing and providing oversight of a behavioral health program that included mental health and substance use disorder programs.

Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension , relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

Swing a baton in a striking technique;

Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;

Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;

Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;

Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

Willing and able to travel;

Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
