ResponsibilitiesThe Manager, Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for directing and managing all functions within the scope of the Health Information Management department; including serving as a key department leader in a Client organization to ensure department and staff performance, process improvement, and regulatory compliance for federal, state, organizational and accreditation bodies. San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital HIM department scope consists of chart completion functions, Release of Information (ROI) and a working relationship with Guidehouse Coding leaders to ensure timely and accurate coding.Duties and Responsibilities- Uphold Guidehouse values, conduct self ethically and with best interests of Client and Guidehouse in mind at all times.
- Ensure positive working relationships between Client and Guidehouse as a key leader for Client site(s).
- Use appropriate discretion to discover, investigate, escalate and address information and issues; including audience selection, communication method(s) and style.
- Plan, direct, organize, and control all activities of the HIM department.
- Work closely with Guidehouse Coding leaders to ensure timely and accurate of SGMH accounts, and maintenance of DNFB/C goals.
- Establish and communicate clear goals, expectations and performance standards to staff.
- Actively participate in meetings, communicate issues, and recommend improvements.
- Identify and submit internal and external reports accurately and timely.
- Ensure appropriate staffing through regular staffing assessments (annually or as volumes change), orientation, training, performance management (quality, productivity, corrective action), employee role fit; work closely with Human Capital to recruit and screen candidates for open positions.
- Ensure department metrics are met or exceeded consistently; where performance is below expectations, develop, monitor and adjust corrective action plans to meet or exceed expectations.
- Develop and manage process improvement activities and quality control measures for all areas of HIM.
- Plan, implement, and coordinate data storage and retrieval systems for information management and facilitate computerization of medical information.
- Regularly monitor security and appropriate handling of all patient records in conjunction with Client leaders (IT, Risk, Compliance as appropriate) to ensure HIPAA compliance.
- Develop and implement record flow and control systems for the department and organization.
- Assist in coordination of information management planning in accordance with regulatory and accreditation compliance in cooperation with other departments and leadership.
- Actively direct or participate in the evaluation, selection, and purchase of health information systems.
- Provide ongoing education and training to organizational personnel in areas relevant to health information management.
- Act as a liaison between teams, departments, administration and the medical staff.
- Maintain a good working relationship with physicians, case management, registration, billing office, and clinical areas and works to resolve issues.
- Stay current on HIM best practices, trends, relevant rules, regulations, and directives from regulatory agencies and third-party payers.
- RHIA or RHIT.
- 5 or more years experience in a Health Information Management Department preferred.
- Previous management or lead experience in an HIM Department
- Fluent knowledge of Health Information principles, practice, resources, systems & healthcare applications.
