About the role:

The Controller will play a key role in managing the organization's financial activities, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and supporting strategic financial planning. Additionally, this position will oversee operations to ensure efficient and effective organizational processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial management, nonprofit accounting, and a passion for environmental conservation. The Controller reports directly to the Executive Director and supervises a staff of 3-4.

Specifics:

Financial Management 

Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. 

Manage the organization's budget, financial forecasts, and monthly cash flow. 

Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the Board of Directors and senior management. 

Oversee major contracts with outside consultants and other vendors. 

Coordinate relationships and support from accounting and banking partners. 

Grant Management: 

Review grant proposal budgets to ensure appropriate coverage of both direct and indirect costs (per grant guidelines) 

Work closely with program managers to track and report on grant finances. 

Ensure accurate allocation of funds and compliance with grant requirements. 

Compliance, Risk Management, and Reporting: 

Ensure compliance with relevant standards, legal requirements, and regulatory obligations. 

Coordinate and support the annual external audit process.

Prepare and submit financial reports to funding agencies, donors, and government entities as required. 

Identify and mitigate operational risks, implementing strategies to minimize potential disruptions. 

Strategic Planning: 

Collaborate with the executive team and Board to develop and implement financial and operational strategies that align with the organization's mission and goals. 

Provide user-friendly financial insights and recommendations to support decision-making processes. 

Support strategic planning to promote long-term sustainability of the organization, and track progress toward that goal. 

Operations Oversight: 

Supervise and optimize organizational processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. 

Collaborate with department heads to address operational challenges and implement solutions. 

Monitor and evaluate the performance of operational systems and recommend improvements. 

Oversee human resources functions, in coordination with our outsourced human resources consultant. 

Team Collaboration: 

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate financial considerations into organizational planning and decision-making. 

Provide guidance and training to staff members on financial policies and procedures. 

What we would like to see from you:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master's degree or CPA preferred). 

Proven experience as a Controller or similar role, preferably in a nonprofit organization. 

Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and regulations. 

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

Proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite. 

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. 

Desire to work in highly collaborative conservation organization committed to excellence. 

Demonstrated ability to work in a small team environment, and with a broad range of individuals and organizations with diverse interests. 

This position offers an annual salary between $95k - $105K
