As a Tool & Die Maker Journeyman, you will support product development and manufacturing by constructing and repairing progressive dies, machining parts, and making prototypes as required by our fast-paced, high-volume sheet metal manufacturing operation. This position is open to a day shift or a swing shift.WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)Develop die function and structure by studying prints of die, product, and prototypes, applying knowledge of material under stress, machining and assembly methods, and mathematics. Create, repair and maintain progressive and single stroke dies, and press braking tooling. Change dies over to specified part required based on production needs. Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies. (25%)Machine parts by using lathe, mill, drill press, surface grinder, CNC mills, and other typical shop equipment. Select, dress, set up, and use grinding wheels for surface grinding, and form grinding. Hand grinds, polish and belt finish die components. (15%)Confirm assembly by verifying dimensions, clearances, and alignment of parts and components with micrometers, thickness gauges, gauge blocks, dial indicators, etc. Confirm performance of die by installing die, checking clearances, inspecting operation of die, making adjustments, and comparing finished product to specifications. Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators so the progressive die produces a finished good that matches the production drawing. Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects then reports to department lead to develop a plan to complete any required repairs. (15%)Provide guidance and support to the production shop in the set-up and operation of punch press dies and tooling. Assist the production department in the assurance of product quality, and the resolution of tooling-related quality issues. (15%)Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs. Perform die maintenance (cleaning, inspection and preventive maintenance) and die repair (reconstruction and restoration of damaged dies). (15%)Maintain tooling drawing files and records of die maintenance and modification. (5%)Order tooling parts and spares as necessary. (5%)Oversee Tool and Die Apprentices giving them the correct feedback as they are learning and progressing. (5%)DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCEIf you can do everything listed above, you’ve got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too :Certificate from accredited school or trade school that a machinist program completed is Required. Simpson Strong-Tie Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) Certification (will certify at hire).Associate degree (AA) in related field or Journeyman’s card Preferred.5-10 years experience in tool and die shop with progressive dies and tools Required.Demonstrated a basic knowledge of raw materials, productions processes, quality control, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacturing and distribution of goods.
