FMS is primarily responsible for financial policy oversight, quality assurance and financial services at Stanford University and its affiliated entities. It also serves as a liaison to the hospitals and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The FMS work environment is grounded by core values that include cultivating growth, celebration and appreciation, and collaborating with curiosity in order to nurture an inclusive environment where everyone is valued, respected, and can thrive.JOB PURPOSE:The Director of Capital Accounting, reporting to the University Controller, will provide strategic direction and oversee the development of the Capital Accounting Team. This role involves partnering with FMS senior management to conceptualize and formulate finance and accounting policies and strategies.CORE DUTIES:
Identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the functioning beyond the immediate unit Consult and advise senior leadership on financial issues, compliance, and risk management.
Design and deliver both short- and long-term complex, comprehensive analyses and high-level strategic modeling; provide advice to support senior leadership decisions.
Oversee execution of all budgets in area of responsibility. Manage business operation and administration of a major school or unit.
Lead and communicate operational plans and strategy for area of responsibility; provide information and context to leadership.
Partner with other leadership to establish the appropriate programs to ensure controls are created and maintained to safeguard assets.
Oversee the programs, processes, and polices designed to provide a strong system of internal controls to protect and steward university resources; establish the appropriate "tone-at-top" to safeguard assets and head compliance initiatives for the organization.
Recommend, negotiate, and influence issues related to university accounting policy; provide strategy, vision, and direction with wide scope and impact.
Represent university to external organizations within the context of the role, typically one of an extremely complex nature.
Champion major initiatives; lead complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.
Direct efforts of managers; develop those in leadership positions and in the leadership pipeline. Develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility.
Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, manage performance, and determine staffing needs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Master's degree or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
Knowledge and ability to apply, interpret, and implement GAAP.
Knowledge and understanding of accounting systems.
Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
Advanced analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
Advanced leadership and strategic management skills.
Demonstrated experience managing people and in strategic management.
Certifications and Licenses: CPA preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Primarily perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
May work extended hours during peak business cycles.

The expected pay range for this position is $200,000 to $210,000 per annum.
