The Public Outreach Specialist will provide field trips, slide programs, and staffing at public events throughout San Luis Obispo County. The primary focus will be on presenting slide programs about recycling and composting to community groups, leading field trips at landfills, and representing Science Discovery at community events.
A successful candidate for this position:
Enjoys public speaking and connecting with learners of all ages
Does well speaking extemporaneously.
Has a passion for environmental topics
Likes to learn and share topics of community interest
Has a background in environmental studies or similar
Hours / Days
12-18 hours/week (can become full-time depending of candidates preference)
Typical workdays are Monday-Friday. Occasional weekend hours may be required for special events.
Qualifications
Coursework in Environmental Studies or a closely related field
At least one year of relevant experience in a volunteer or paid capacity
Exceptional public speaking skills and experience
Excellent teaching and communication skills
Ability to present information to diverse audiences of all ages
Capacity to work independently and as part of a team
Reliable transportation with a good driving record and auto insurance
Flexible weekly schedule, with occasional weekend hours required for special events
Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds at a distance of 20 feet
Completion of a background check
