Marin Housing is pleased to announce a full-time job opportunity for a dedicated, dependable, and experienced maintenance worker to perform general maintenance.

THE POSITION

Marin Housing Authority is seeking an experienced professional responsible for performing skilled maintenance work in one or more craft areas such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical maintenance and repair, cement finishing, painting, or landscaping in the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation for public housing facilities in multiple locations; performing a variety of semi-skilled work in other than the primary craft areas; providing training to staff; acting in a lead worker capacity for projects and work crews; and performing related work as assigned.

The position requires a great deal of skill in dealing with clientele, a high level of conservation awareness, a strong sense of the mandates of efficiencies, strategic planning ability and a commitment to quality control.

The qualified maintenance specialist will be assigned to the Quad properties located in Fairfax, San Anselmo, San Rafael and Tiburon with a total of 67 units.

REQUIREMENTS

Maintenance experience required. Please see attached job classification for a non-exhaustive list of duties.

Work is normally performed independently and requires the ability to determine the nature of the work to be performed and the materials and supplies required. The On-Site Maintenance Specialist will be required to live on-site at Sundance Apartments and will be available for some emergency on call hours on rotation.

WHO WE ARE

Our purpose is to assist low- and moderate-income people to secure and maintain quality, affordable housing. The Marin Housing Authority (“MHA”) is a small, dynamic agency, well-respected in our field. The Housing Choice Voucher and the Public Housing programs have been either a high performer or a standard performer in the past few years. We serve thousands of people through a wide range of programs and services, including public housing for families, seniors and the disabled; housing choice vouchers (Section 8); supportive housing services for special needs populations; rental assistance payments; and financial and technical assistance for moderate-income first-time homebuyers and low-income homeowners. We have about 55 employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Abilities

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: a high school diploma or its equivalent and three years of experience in performing a wide range of building and/or landscape construction, maintenance and repair, which must include at least one year of performing skilled craft work in the area of assignment. Experience in an environment where organization, teamwork, adherence to regulatory requirements, report-writing and communication skills is crucial. Thorough knowledge of basic principles and practices of maintenance and construction, local/state/federal health and safety standards, automated data systems is required, as is the ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships with residents, landlords, staff, vendors and other clientele.

A valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record is a prerequisite to employment.

The ideal candidate will also:

Possess initiative, strong organizational skills, judgment and discretion;

Be able to make independent decisions and plan, forecast and manage change;

Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills;

Be a team player, capable of working on a variety of property management and other issues facing housing authorities today;

Understand the importance of excellent customer service;

Be able to use a handheld smartphone for work orders; and

Be able to work effectively under tight deadlines and on multiple assignments.

Physical Demands:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The class also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, incumbents in this indoor/outdoor class work in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. Incumbents may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

DRIVING LICENSE

Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles. All applicants must submit a copy of their current (issued within last six months) DMV driving history at the time of their application. COMPENSATION / BENEFITS

Hourly salary range is $24.24-$32.37. The position includes a rent free, on-site two-bedroom apartment (utilities not included). Our current comprehensive benefits package includes a generous monthly allowance for medical, dental and life insurance; CalPERS retirement 2% @ 62; a 457 deferred compensation plan; 12 paid sick days per year; 10 days paid annual leave per year for the first two years, and will progressively increase as years of service increase (up to 30 days per year); 45 paid floating holiday hours per year; and 13 paid holidays. Finally, the Housing Authority has 9/80 schedule available to employees, which, upon supervisor approval, allows eligible employees to have every other Friday off.
