Golf Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice

The mechanic apprentice is responsible for assisting in year-round, day-to-day on-site operation and oversight of the golf course, grounds, food and beverage, building, and catering equipment maintenance and associated administrative functions. Responsible for assisting with regular maintenance: including preventative maintenance, repairs of failing or unsafe equipment, record keeping, safety programs, completing and scheduling of work assignments.

Essential Functions

The duties of the Apprentice Mechanic include, but are not limited to:

Personnel Functions

Support equipment manager in oversight of fleet and operation by staff

Serve as an interface between staff and equipment manager for communication of equipment needs, repairs, etc

Establish a sense of purpose among a diverse work group by encouraging day-to-day commitment to our mission and operating values.

Responsible for ongoing improvements to training programs relating to general safety, and equipment operations.

Maintenance Shop Responsibilities

Develop, nurture, and sustain collaborative working relationships with all management and staff.

Encourage ongoing communication with the superintendent and staff regarding equipment maintenance and special maintenance facility projects.

Ability to operate and repair a wide range of equipment (tractor, mowers, spray equipment, rollers, and small equipment).

Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects/failures in various golf course maintenance equipment including, diesel, electric and gasoline powered vehicles, trucks, sweepers, rollers, mowers, small engines, and other mechanical equipment used in utility work.

Routinely grind and sharpen bedknives, reels, and blades for mowing equipment.

Instruct and/or train golf course maintenance workers regarding preventative maintenance, and proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment.

Prioritize equipment repair and maintenance work.

Assist in maintaining a preventative maintenance program within budget.

Assist in purchasing repair and replacement parts and supplies.

Keep a complete set of records for equipment and parts inventory, equipment condition, cost of repairs, and preventative maintenance.

Spot-check equipment on course for proper performance.

Work with superintendent and equipment manager to continue to improve maintenance schedules and systems.

Oversee ongoing building maintenance of golf course buildings; including fire sheds, on-course bathrooms, pump station, administrative offices, maintenance barn, and Lombard Café.

Physical Demands/Qualifications

Must be able to:

Read and understand maintenance and service manuals and perform recommended preventative and warranty procedures.

Read and write English.

Obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Non-Physical Demands/Qualifications

Enrollment in a current technical/trade school for vehicle repair required.

Read and understand work orders, shop instructions, specifications and procedures manuals, and posted safety instructions.

High School Diploma (or Equivalent GED) combined with 2 years successful completion of a High School Automotive Technology program or Certificate of Completion, or High School Diploma (or Equivalent GED) combined with successful completion (Certificate of Completion) of 1 year Automotive Technology program vocational school/college, or 3 years of Auto Mechanic experience.

Experience with automotive maintenance and/or routine minor repairs (e.g., oil change, battery replacement, wiper blade replacement, light bulb replacement)

Environmental Conditions

The incumbent will work both in the shop and out of doors and will be exposed to a wide range of temperature, humidity, and wind conditions. Some tasks may require incumbent to work in an awkward position and they may be exposed to hazards such as oil, gasoline and diesel fuel and exhaust, pesticide residues, welding gasses, and other materials associated with equipment repair and golf operations.
