Hello, my name is Michael and I am here to let you know that Reliable Auto Repair is looking for an automotive technician to join our team.
I am trying a new way to find the right person to hire and instead of boring you with 2 pages of job descriptions I'd like to be straight forward and honest. The following situations are actual experiences that I've had, and although humorous, I am being very serious.
You definitely should call us if :
- You are an actual mechanic who has worked at an actual repair shop for at least 2 years. Changing the oil in your friends' car does not constitute experience, neither does watching videos on youtube.
- You have your own tools and toolbox. A flathead screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers in a plastic grocery bag is a start, but not enough.
- Your only focus when you are at work is to fix cars. Standing around telling the same pointless stories about your failed relationships doesn't help fix anyone's car and just bums everyone out.
- You are a person who keeps their word. If you make a commitment to show up in the morning, there is a whole team of people that depend on you to follow through. We stand behind our people, and if someone isn't interested in how their actions affect the team, that means they are not our person.
You definitely should not call us if :
- You are going to beg to be paid cash off the books to hide your income from child support within the first 30 minutes of meeting you.
- You look at your career and its' workdays as a "run-out-the-clock" situation. Aimless bare minimum people are generally to be avoided socially, and even more-so at work. If you don't care about the effort you put into your days, it would be best for everyone if you stayed home.
- You regularly disappear for 4 days after payday going on a bender and come back with a fake story of how you were kidnapped from a light rail station.
- You tell everyone you know how to replace an axle seal and then when it comes time to do the work, you admit you can't do it, start crying, and run to your truck never to be seen again. I am not exaggerating.
The next section is to break down how we get paid and concrete examples of what skill sets are needed to make certain amounts of money. If you are a good technician that can perform complicated repairs quickly with no mistakes, the shop can charge more money for your work, the shop makes more money, and then you make more money in return.
Technicians getting paid $17.55-$22.00 / hour can :
- Use a lift safely, keep their work area clean, perform an oil and filter change, rotate tires, change air filters, change wipers, top off fluids, reset maintenance lights, take pictures on an iPad of what ever is wrong with the vehicle, and read step by step directions that are notated on the inspection software. Simply put, if you cannot lift a 2013 Toyota Camry, drain the oil, replace the filter, fill the oil, take a picture of the brakes, and turn off the maintenance light in 30 minutes this category is not for you.
Technicians getting paid $22.00-$28.00 / hour can :
- Do everything the technician listed before can, and also is capable of changing belts, fluids, tires, suspension components, steering gear components, and essentially be capable of doing medium repair jobs. Simply put, if you cannot replace a stretch fit A/C belt on a 2006 Mazda 3 in 10 minutes this category is not for you.
Technicians getting paid $28.00-$37.00 / hour can :
- Do everything the technicians listed before can as is also capable of completing timing chain jobs, timing belt jobs, engine and transmission replacements, rear differential replacements, and essentially performing heavy repair jobs. Simply put, if you cannot replace a rear wheel bearing on a 2004 Toyota Sequoia in under 3 1/2 hours this category is not for you.
Technicians getting paid $37.00-$45.00 / hour can :
- Do everything the technicians listed before can and is also capable of performing electrical diagnosis, knows how to interpret and read wiring diagrams, knows how to diagnose small evap leak codes, and has a test and repair smog license. Simply put, if you cannot diagnose a cam / crank correlation code by using an oscilloscope to inspect wave forms in one hour this category is not for you.
In conclusion, Reliable Auto Repair is a professional shop. We offer medical insurance, matching 401k, dental, vision, monthly tool allowance, bonus structure based on productivity / hours turned, paid vacation, and a lot of perks that big companies have but we are still a small business at heart.
