Oakland Yacht Club:

Is a private membership yacht club that was established in 1913 and has 200 slips in its marina. It is in the City of Alameda along the Oakland Alameda Estuary.

General Description:

The Assistant Harbormaster is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the harbor and clubhouse. This includes enforcement of the Club's harbor policy and rules. The safety of all yachts, both members and visitors, is of primary importance. The Assistant Harbormaster acts as the agent for the Club with respect to visiting and cruising organizations. The Assistant Harbormaster reports to the General Manager.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following,

Harbor, Docks and Associated Equipment

Is skilled in the use of all safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, oil/fuel spill equipment, and emergency pumps. Certified in CPR and Defibrillator use.

Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the dock daily. This includes but not limited to washing the docks, keeping the docks clutter free, ensuring all dock lines, electric cords and hoses are kept in a safe and presentable manner

Maintains and repairs docks, gangways, and all associated equipment. This includes but is not limited to electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and other mechanical skills.

Responsible for identifying any damage to the Club’s property or facility and determining who is responsible for the damage. (Member, Guest or Vendor)

Responsible for managing the activities of the harbor assistant.

Maintains the Club's boat in proper operating condition and responsible for preparing the boat for regatta season.

Required to possess a California Boaters Card

Grounds and Landscaping

Maintain the grounds around the Clubhouse and Marina

Maintain and repair and dock gates and landings

Maintain Flags and Burgees on the flag poles, observing proper flag etiquette.

Assist in placing and removing garbage totes on pick up days. Maintaining and cleaning the storage shed for the totes and other storage shed

Will be the lead contact for all vendors & contractors for the marina and clubhouse. Maintain and oversee the guest and vendor keys.

Visiting Yachts and Cruising Groups

Is responsible for the safety and comfort of visiting yachts. This includes assisting with assigning berthing, greeting visitors, and assisting with tie-ups. Will work in conjunction with the Port Captain in organizing cruise ins from other yacht club.

Security

Responsible for the security of the facility, including recognizing and responding to potential hazards, and/or bring them to the attention of the General Manager

Responsible for determining the business of any unknown person on the docks and grounds. This includes people tampering with any vessels in the harbor. The Assistant Harbormaster shall challenge anyone entering the property by unusual means such as walking around closed gates entering by boat or swimming. Trespassers shall be asked to leave immediately. The Assistant Harbormaster shall call the police immediately if they feel threatened or the situation merits their involvement.

Records and Reports

Annually prepares a list of vessels in the marina for the annual County Tax Assessor

Manage & maintain the small vessel storage

Assist in the monthly meter reading of electrical use.

Work with the County Weights and Measurement department to make sure all the electric meters are certified.

Assist in managing that all vessels are currently registered or documented and have current boaters’ insurance at the Club mandated levels.

Special Projects

Will cooperate with the responsible committee on special projects when directed by the General Manager.

Required Skills and Abilities

Must be able to understand and use basic computer programs

Must be competent in basic repairs skills, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and others

Must be able to communicate using radio and cell phone.

Must present a friendly and helpful attitude and demeanor when dealing with members, guests, staff and vendors.

Must demonstrate a proactive and positive attitude toward identifying and fixing problems before they escalate into a major problem

Must be knowledgeable of the Green Marine standards of operation.

Must be knowledge and in compliance with all Coast Guard, BCDC, and Regional Water Quality Board.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to access all areas of the marina, including below the dock

Must be able to lift and carry 50lbs at a time

Must be able to stand, bend, reach, sit and lay down as part of the job responsibility

Must be able to work in inclement weather and with unusual hazards associated with a marina environment.

Must be able to see and hear alarms and dangers or hazards.

Must be available to work weekends and holidays if needed.

Salary & Work Week

A competitive salary commensurate with experience.

The standard work week shall be from Tuesday to Saturday. It may become necessary to temporarily alter this schedule during times to accommodate members and guests and during emergency situations. The work environment will be 80% outdoors and 20% indoors

The Assistant Harbormasters hours may vary depending upon the needs of the Club to allow for all duties of the Assistant Harbormaster to be completed.
