Douglas and Sturgess is looking for full time and part time sales associates and shop/warehouse help to assist us in doing what we do best, which is to provide some of the most esoteric materials for the local artist community. As this is an entry level position, no experience is necessary other than those listed below. We are a close knit team of players who have served creative individuals seeking to walk a different path in their creative endeavors for over 75 years.

Established in 1947 by Robert Douglas, Douglas and Sturgess has always strived to offer some of the most unique materials available for creating art of all kinds. We think of ourselves as a bridge between the industrial world and the creative one, enabling makers to acquire those materials in small quantities that might otherwise be unavailable to them. Many of the products that we offered at our inception are still available in our stores today. We currently operate out of two stores; our flagship store in San Francisco and our store/warehouse and order fulfillment facility in Richmond. Both of these facilities have classrooms where we hold instructional meetings and seminars.

The Douglas and Sturgess employee, whether part time or full time has a strong sense of service to the customer, an understanding as to what we sell and the relationship of various materials with each other. Sense of service should be inherent, the materials understanding and their relationships we can teach you. A strong work ethic is of course tantamount and a dedication to assuring that each customer has what they need before they walk out of our doors is at the top of the list of requirements. Fluency in English is a must although being fluent in other languages is always a plus. Attention to detail and the ability to organize a process into its smaller components is a must. The ability to work with a small team and the quality of cooperation is understood.

Being that we have the two facilities, employees can be called upon to work at “either or”, so to speak. Hours of operation are 8:30-5:30 Monday through Friday and 10:00-3:00 on Saturdays at our Richmond store. We are offering both full time and part time shifts, depending on the employee’s needs whether they be a student or have work at other establishments. This job entails everything from carrying out packages to a customer’s car to offloading a truck to waiting on customers at the counter to filling various types of containers with product, which can be both liquids and solids. Stocking the shelves and maintaining our stores can also be a part of the daily duties. If you have an aversion to “getting dirty” then this is probably not a good fit for you.
