Street Level Cycles Bicycle Mechanic & Program Coordinator

Part time or Full time, Non-Exempt

Waterside Workshops is seeking a part or full-time bicycle mechanic and program coordinator to work in our Street Level Cycles program. Women, non-binary, LGBTQ+, people of color, encouraged to apply.

Organizational Overview:

Waterside Workshops provides job-training, outdoor recreation, and wraparound holistic support for some of the Bay Area’s most at-risk youth while offering services to the community including a bicycle shop and repair facility, a wooden boat building shop, bicycle and boat rentals, and a youth-run coffee shop. In our Street Level Cycles program, youth interns learn professional bike repair and customer service refurbishing used bicycles, which are redistributed back to the community as affordable, sustainable transportation.

Role Overview:

Street Level Cycles Bicycle Mechanic and Program Coordinator supports the operations of the bike shop by providing excellent customer service to members of the public and serves as a role model and instructor for youth staff and interns. Duties include: building bikes to sell in our retail shop, training youth interns in bicycle mechanics, processing incoming bike donations, assisting community members with bike repair in Open Shop, and providing sales and service in our retail shop. Must be able to work at least one weekend day per week. This position has the potential for advancement at Waterside Workshops. This position reports to the Street Level Cycles Program Director.

Essential Job Functions:

1) Retail sales and service

Deliver professional, accessible, and helpful customer service to a diverse customer base Assist customers with bicycle, bike part, and accessories sales

Operate point of sale software and cash register

Diagnose and estimate repair work needed on customer bikes

Perform bicycle repair service

2) Used bicycle recycling and reuse

Build and refurbish bicycles for sale in our retail shop or for donation to youth and adults in need Process and organize incoming bicycle donations

3) Youth job training:

Teach professional bicycle mechanics to youth interns

Teach important “soft skills” (timeliness, communication, teamwork, etc.)

4) Community Open Shop

Assist community members from all walks of life with bike repair during our weekend Open Shop

5) General Waterside Workshops

Assist in the general operations of Waterside Workshops as needed

Participate in youth outdoor activities and camping trips

Works in partnership with Executive Director and other staff to contribute to the organization's mission, participate in organization-wide programs, and help create a sustainable organizational culture

Qualifications:

Advanced bicycle mechanics

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds

Proficient with point of sale software and online ordering platforms

Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Is hard-working, flexible, and patient

Passion for the mission of Waterside Workshops

Compensation:

Hourly pay range $22-27 DOE. Full-time positions are eligible for generous benefits, including: Medical and Dental insurance

10 days of paid vacation (increases with length of tenure)

5 paid holidays, plus a paid holiday recess from 12/25–1/1

6 days of paid sick leave per year
