Bilingual Child Abuse Prevention Program Caseworker

Status: 0.70 FTE (28 hours per week) Part Time Non-Exempt

Reports to: CAPP Attorney and Supervising Attorney

Salary: $25.00 - $26.00 per hour, depending on experience

Legal Aid of Sonoma County (LASC) is a non-profit organization that provides low-income clients assistance with protective orders, eviction defense, guardianships, elder law, immigration, and related legal remedies. LASC seeks a Bilingual Child Abuse Prevention Program (CAPP) Caseworker to support our CAPP attorney and CAPP Child Protective Services (CPS) Caseworker in providing legal services to families who need assistance in obtaining guardianship of abused or neglected children as well as families who are working with CPS to prevent having their children placed in the custody of the state. The range of services offered by the CAPP program includes assistance with pleadings, legal advice and information, and may include in-court representation. Legal Aid carries an extensive caseload, and the environment is very fast paced. This CAPP Caseworker will be based on-site at the LASC office.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Legal Support for Clients:

Intake and screen potential new guardianship clients for eligibility.

Conduct client correspondence, including written and oral translation of correspondence.

Draft, file and process legal documents, including pleadings and declarations, under supervision of CAPP staff.

Prepare clients for mediation and court appearances.

Prepare materials for hearing and trial, including exhibits and court forms when necessary.

Provide translation for Spanish speaking clients and attorneys.

Prepare translation of written documents.

General:

Set up case files and enter new client cases into LASC’s client database (Legal Server). Maintain up-to-date case notes, time reporting and client demographic data in Legal Server. Follow legal case protocols and maintain organized case files.

Schedule and maintain court, client and attorney meeting calendars, and track case deadlines.

Schedule client consultations.

Translate forms and self-help materials into Spanish.

Complete specialized projects such as data compilation:

o Assist CAPP CPS Caseworker with data entry into the CPS database ‘Apricot’.

o Compile and enter data for use in analyses and reports.

o Compile spreadsheets that describe and interpret data.

Close completed cases in Legal Server and enter appropriate legal outcomes.

Participate in community-wide outreach.

Administrative and other tasks as assigned to support program or agency.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Bilingual in English and Spanish.

At least two (2) years’ experience in an office environment providing services to clients, preferably a non-profit or law office, or college degree.

A commitment to working with all persons regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, economic background, immigration status, gender identification, or sexual orientation.

Compassion for and desire to help the vulnerable and underserved in our community.

Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team.

Must be flexible, work well under pressure, and manage time effectively.

Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office, legal forms software programs, google docs, and database programs.

Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively with great attention to detail, including timely case management and capturing of data for reports to funders.

A firm commitment to on-time and accurate timesheet reporting is required.

A valid CA Driver’s License, proof of current automobile insurance, and reliable transportation are required for this position.

This position is not remote. Applicants must be within commuting distance of the LASC office in Santa Rosa, CA.

Skills/Experience Desired:

A demonstrated commitment to social justice.

Prior Legal training (law student or paralegal student) preferred, but not required, depending on experience.

Prior experience working with individuals experiencing abuse or neglect or navigating the guardianship process.
