Job Description
The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist (EHS) is responsible for maintaining the health and safety of the plant workforce and environment by monitoring and evaluating health and safety conditions; assuring compliance with applicable policies and governmental standards; and maintenance of the EHS programs, policies, and procedures for the site. The primary objective is to ensure a ZERO harm and injury FREE working environment including methodologies, initiatives and strategies that promote safe operations, safety awareness, training, and continuous improvement to eliminate unsafe behaviors, conditions, and hazards in the workplace. The EHS Specialist supports the strategic vision of a ZERO harm and an injury FREE workplace by working with cross-functional teams both internally and externally.
Primary Responsibilities
In addition to overall input to site environmental, health and safety initiatives, strategies, programs and procedures, additional responsibilities include:
Deliver EHS programs to train employees in work site safety practices by promoting and leading to a site culture where Safety is engrained as a core value with all employees
Drives key effective, sustainable implementation of corporate and site EHS initiatives, strategies, programs and procedures, responsibilities via firsthand leadership, coaching and teamwork
Facilitate, train and coach new and current employees from onboarding to Cal/OSHA required annual training and other safety related topics to ensure compliance with government mandated training
Collaborates with employees to identify and implement solutions to safety issues identified in inspections and investigations to eliminate incidents and preventing recurrence
Effectively coaches and develops supervisors to be effective EHS leaders
Reviews incident and injury reporting and analyzes data to identify trends
Compliance with regulations and company policies by routinely interacting with employees on the plant floor
Analyze EHS programs, conditions and behaviors and recommends changes to continuously improve site EHS performance
Provides key support with all environmental policies and procedures
Leads and ensures thorough RCA investigation of all incidents, in coordination with Site leadership
Fosters and develops a culture where everyone is actively engaged in performing their work in a safe manner and co-workers hold each other accountable to prevent at-risk behaviors
Oversee regulatory compliance audits/inspections and associated record keeping
In partnership with HR oversees worker’s compensation claims by working with the insurance company, injured employee, and clinics from the opening of the claim and until the claim closes
Maintains OSHA log and all other required data entry
Provides EHS functional and technical expertise/coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives
Collaborates with other key functions on initiatives including Engineering, HR, Quality, Operations, etc. to deliver on goals and plans.
Supports other sites within the network as needed
Competencies/Skills/Knowledge Required

Ability to build teams throughout all levels and functions of the Site with respect, tact and win-win outcomes.
Extensive working knowledge of Cal/OSHA and regulatory compliance inspection procedures
Decision-making; must be capable of making well-informed decisions in both routine and emergency situations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required along with the ability to communicate with audiences that have a broad range of background and understanding
Thorough knowledge of basic industrial hygiene and occupational health hazards and regulations
High diligence is needed to maintain awareness of existing and proposed safety codes/regulations and company guidelines plus maintain and analyze appropriate data
Must be proactive as well as solve problems and make decisions in time sensitive conditions
Understanding of fire codes, standards, and regulations
Awareness of applicable environmental policies, standards, guidelines, regulations, and local requirements (spill containment, facility waste stream & disposal requirements, etc.)
Strong presentation skills: ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
Ability to develop programs to reduce worker’s compensation costs, recordable injury, and lost time injury rates
Guide site-based safety teams and effectively lead safety committees to engage site personnel
Lead and maintain Behavior Based Safety (BBS) observations for the site and encourage engagement in reporting BBS observations across all levels of the organization
Must demonstrate good insight and ability to develop mutual solutions to challenges.
Apply ergonomic principles and recommend improvements with engineering or administrative controls
Understand biomechanics and human interaction/impact with machinery and workstations
Examine tasks and determine the best method of accomplishing work to prevent injury
Oversee incident investigation and preparation of CAPA reports for prevention of recurring incidents across multiple manufacturing sites
Initiative to lead continuous improvement efforts.
First Aid, CPR, and AED skills and certification
Computer literate, preferably Microsoft Office suite, Maximo, and SAP
OSHA 30-hour card
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Occupational Safety, Environmental Sciences or related field, or a combination of education and experience related to the position
Demonstrated experience working in a safety and environmentally conscious manufacturing environment (confectionary experience preferred)
1-3 years of experience in successfully coordinating EHS activities in a manufacturing setting
Knowledge of laws and regulations regarding Cal/OSHA, NFPA, DOT and EPA
Strong technical expertise in manufacturing safety and knowledge of safety processes
Professional certifications in EHS related fields are considered beneficial
