This extra-help (temporary) Deputy County Counsel position can be filled at the II or III level, depending on the candidate's qualifications. As attorneys gain experience and meet or exceed performance standards, they are eligible for promotion to subsequent levels in the series. The Deputy County Counsel II or III – Juvenile Dependency position represents a great opportunity to work in beautiful Sonoma wine country and join a collegial team of attorneys and staff committed to public service and quality of life. In this exciting role, you will provide legal counsel to and advise the Human Services Department's Family, Youth, and Children's Services (FYC) Division regarding dependency cases. The successful candidate will also:
Draft legal documents such as memoranda, briefs, writs, and appeals
Appear in court on review calendars and contested hearing calendars
Participate in settlement conferences
Work collaboratively with other members of the Juvenile Dependency team
Study and apply new case law, statutory law, and legislative changes
Attend trainings, and in turn, may train other attorneys and FYC personnel in the juvenile dependency area of law
In addition, the Deputy County Counsel II or III may assist with other work performed by attorneys in the Health and Human Services Practice Group and assist with County Counsel's other areas of responsibility.
The Ideal Candidate will possess many of the following:
Some juvenile dependency related public law experience
Exceptional research and written communication skills
Courtroom experience including trial advocacy highly desired
A demonstrated ability to creatively problem-solve
Experience with complex and fast-moving projects
The ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team
An excellent academic record is highly desired
