The Local Butcher Shop – North Berkeley

Starting at $19.18/hr + Tips Full-Time Weekends Required Worker-Owned Co-op

Do you enjoy working with high-quality ingredients, organizing systems, and supporting a fast-paced, collaborative kitchen? Are you comfortable behind the wheel and behind the scenes? If so, you might be a great fit for the Porter/Garde Manger role at The Local Butcher Shop.

Who We Are:

The Local Butcher Shop is an award-winning, whole-animal craft butchery located at Shattuck and Cedar in North Berkeley. We source whole carcasses directly from local, sustainable farms and use every part of the animal to create a wide range of value-added products. We are also a worker-owned cooperative—ownership is available to all employees after one year of service. Our shop is friendly, fast-paced, and committed to high standards of sustainability and service.

About the Role:

This role is essential to keeping our systems running smoothly—receiving deliveries, organizing inventory, assisting with production, and ensuring everything is clean, labeled, and in its right place. It’s a great position for someone with strong organizational skills, a sense of responsibility, and a love for good food.

Primary Responsibilities:

Receive and store food and non-food deliveries accurately and efficiently

Collect and record weights and product information as needed

Track inventory of supplies and products, and communicate restocking needs

Transport goods to and from the shop using our delivery van

Assist in the preparation of sausages, ptés, deli meats, stocks, soups, and more

Clean and maintain kitchen and storage areas in accordance with food safety standards

Our Ideal Candidate:

Has experience in foodservice, retail, or kitchen environments

Is organized, detail-oriented, and proactive

Works well independently and as part of a team

Is comfortable driving a delivery van and has a clean driving record

Can lift and carry at least 50 lbs and work on their feet for extended periods

Is available weekends and during holiday seasons

Is friendly, adaptable, and eager to learn

Schedule & Compensation:

Typical shifts are 7:30 AM–4 PM, five days per week

Additional hours may be required around major holidays (especially November–December)

Starting wage: $19.18/hour + tips, with room for increases based on experience and performance

Worker-ownership and profit-sharing opportunities available after one year

How to Apply:
