Ensure effective care for outstanding dogs.

At Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), our mission starts with the breeding and care of puppies who are on a journey to potentially become guide dogs for the blind or visually impaired. As a Veterinary Practice Manager, you’ll lead with integrity and oversee the day-to-day operations of our California veterinary hospital, which serves the unique needs of our dogs throughout their puppy, training, and working lives as Guide Dogs, K9 Buddies, and Breeders. You’ll manage a team of veterinary professionals while handling complicated operational tasks, providing customer service, maintaining employee engagement, and ensuring the clinic maintains compliance with industry standards and regulations. You will also represent the clinic at organizational meetings, acting as a liaison between the veterinary hospital and other departments and ensuring seamless integration of veterinary care with the broader objectives of the organization.

What you’ll do:

Manage daily operations of the CA veterinary clinic, including care for on-campus dogs and appointments for dogs in foster care, active service, puppy-raising homes, and other programs

Lead team meetings and ensure appropriate scheduling of the clinic’s staff and veterinarians to ensure adequate coverage and optimize patient flow, team efficiency, and appointment availability for surgeries, procedures, and wellness care

Maintain the staff dog vaccine appointment calendar, update records in Salesforce, and support onboarding of new staff dogs by reviewing and approving vaccine documentation

Supervise and mentor veterinary team members and oversee training, performance management, and professional development while fostering a positive, communicative, and accountable team culture that reflects GDB organizational values

Track clinic-related expenses, billing, and reporting to ensure cost-effective operations and collaborate with the Medical Director to monitor the clinic’s budget

Ensure clinic facilities and equipment are well-maintained, sanitized, and compliant with health and safety regulations, and coordinate repairs with Facilities staff as well as new purchases and installations with external vendors

Oversee or directly manage medical supply and drug inventory for both the clinic and Puppy Center, ensuring appropriate stock levels and cost-effective purchasing

Partner with leadership to develop and implement strategies that support the evolving needs of dogs in our care and assist in expanding veterinary services and enhancing care protocols as needed

Serve as OSHA coordinator for the clinic and ensure updated records for licenses, certifications, and permits as well as operational compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and internal protocols and animal welfare standards

What you’ll love:

Ensuring the quality, health, and temperament of our dogs in support of a fulfilling mission

Mentoring your team and helping them achieve their goals and develop their careers

Playing a wide-ranging role that taps into many skillsets and offers plenty of variety

Working on our beautiful campus in San Rafael, California, with extras like an onsite gym

The qualifications you’ll need:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent technical/business education preferred

5+ years of experience managing veterinary professionals; experience working within a complex organizational structure preferred

Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills as well as project management and time management skills; comfortability with navigating common and proprietary software programs for scheduling, record-keeping, and communication preferred

Strong ability to demonstrate sound judgement and make timely and prudent decisions

Ability to handle a variety of large breed dogs weighing up to 90 pounds with varying strength and manageability, and ability to move or transfer dogs up to 40 pounds

Demonstrated ability to uphold and model the values and behaviors of Guide Dogs for the Blind
