We are urgently looking for several people to assist in caretaking for an individual in downtown Oakland who was recently hospitalized due to a severe EDS and POTS flare up. We need folks ASAP for morning, afternoon/evening, and overnight shifts over the next couple of days starting tomorrow (Thursday 4/25). We will likely need ongoing support and will be crowdfunding to secure funds. Right now we can offer $25 an hour for at least a few days.
Responsibilities:
Help T with eating, drinking, using the bathroom, cleaning, and other tasks around the apartment.
This may involve helping her transfer from bed to commode or toilet. You will not need to lift her, but may need to provide some physical support.
Requirements for caregivers:
Be able to physically do the tasks described above; be able to remain calm during stressful situations; be willing to wear an n95 mask while working.
Desired characteristics for caregivers:
Have experience with EDS and/or POTS; be trauma-informed
Notes about the space and the situation:
The apartment is small and has gotten cluttered. There is not a space for caregivers to have their own space during shifts. The apartment is in downtown Oakland in a building with an elevator. It is about a 10 min walk from 12th st Bart.
Thea’s partner also lives in the apartment; she has been providing care but recently injured her back so is not able to.
There is a cat present. There will be a HEPA filter running all the time.
T has been in a medical crisis for several weeks and is still trying to receive medical care. Caretakers with experience navigating the medical industrial complex and experience working with people with disabilities are strongly preferred.
