JOB SUMMARY
Within a framework of standard policies and procedures, to perform general cleaning and custodial functions in and around assigned City buildings; and to perform other duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry and journey level classification in the custodian series. Incumbents are assigned to work in and around various City buildings and facilities, and are responsible for keeping assigned areas clean, maintained and orderly. This classification is distinguished from the higher level classification of Lead Custodian by the latters responsibility for coordinating and supervising the work of a custodial crew.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general to limited supervision from the Lead Custodian
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs general janitorial and custodial functions at assigned City areas
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and buffs floors
Cleans, vacuums, and shampoos rugs and carpets
Cleans, dusts, and polishes walls, furniture, woodwork, and office equipment
Washes, scrubs, mops, and disinfects rest rooms
Cleans and polishes metal work such as door panels and hand railings
Empties and cleans waste containers, picks up paper and other refuse on grounds in immediate area of assigned buildings
Assists in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desk, furniture, and other equipment
Cleans light fixtures and replaces light bulbs and tubes
Observes for and reports needed repairs of buildings and equipment
Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and buffing machines, scrubbers, etc.
Locks and unlocks doors and gates to ensure security of buildings and related areas
Delivers and picks up supplies and mail as assigned
Maintains an accurate schedule and record of work performed
Reports facility misuse/damage to supervisor immediately
Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required
May provide initial training for new employees
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

perform heavy manual labor, including moving furniture and custodial equipment, and lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds, such as garbage and recycling containers, furniture, and custodial supplies and equipment
perform tasks which require manual dexterity, such as repairing and cleaning equipment; perform tasks which require coordination and balance, such as changing light bulbs while standing on ladder
identify areas in need of cleaning and perform cleaning as appropriate
read, understand and apply written instructions, including work procedures, product labels, material safety data sheets, and equipment instruction manuals
understand and follow verbal instructions
climb stairs
maintain simple records, such as logs and timecards
follow safety procedures; identify and report safety hazards
work with chemicals, strong unpleasant odors and fumes
establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
perform routine, repetitive work, to completion
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.
LICENSE & CERTIFICATION:
a valid and appropriate California Drivers License including a safe driving record

APPOINTMENT AND BENEFITS
The position benefits include vacation, sick leave, and holidays. The City offers Public Employees Retirement System benefits. Employees shall pay the full employee share of CalPERS contribution.
The candidate selected will be appointed for a 12-month probationary period. Names of successful candidates who do not receive a job offer will be placed on an employment list which normally remains effective for one year. The Human Resources Department may abolish an Employment List at any time the needs of the City so require. The position is represented by the Operating Engineers Local 3 bargaining unit.
Prior to appointment to the position of Custodian, a medical examination and Department of Justice LiveScan fingerprinting will be required.
