We’re hiring a few new teammates to join our cafe staff/barista team at our seasonal counter-service farm-to-table cafe & coffee bar. Café 108° serves visitors coming to a beloved and historic hot spring daytime resort from May through September. We’re looking to fill these positions as soon as possible–ideally all will be hired by the end of April and starting in the first half of May. (For one or two last spots we may still be hiring into late May–with a start date at the absolute latest of mid-June. If our website still lists this position it remains open and we encourage all qualified applicants to apply.)

This position can be part-time with a minimum of one (1) shift day/week, however, qualified candidates desiring more hours can work a full-time schedule. The available shifts largely fall on Tuesdays-Sundays, but those who can consistently work either Saturdays or Sundays, or both, from May through to the end of September will enjoy shift priority as well as the most robust tips. (If desired, qualified applicants may additionally apply for positions/shifts in other spheres–e.g. Gate Guardian, Lifeguardian, etc. Most, but not all, of our staff enjoy working multiple spheres, both to build a personalized position/custom schedule, and to support overall team resiliency and cohesion.)

Those with a love of food & people, farm-to-table culinary arts, regenerative farming, and eating organically for the health of our bodies and planet will find themselves the strongest match for our small-team culture co-creating healthy, pleasurable, nourishing and inclusive experiences. Our ideal cafe staff/barista candidate is also someone who is excited to grow with our organization by returning to work at Café 108° season after season building upon their expertise and experience, and, if desired, taking on greater responsibility and seniority with each passing year.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Our cafe staff/baristas help to coordinate and implement all aspects of our cafe, working closely with our Cafe Manager and other staff/stewards in a variety of tasks including: preparing, plating and serving all food and drinks, as well as bussing, dishwashing, cleaning and resetting tables/service areas, tracking & restocking supplies, cashiering, greeting customers, and answering guest questions. Speed, accuracy, stamina, an optimistic attitude and stellar customer service/communication skills are required.

Candidates ideally have some culinary, restaurant, catering, barista and/or commercial food experience and would love to grow their skills helping to run an entire food service operation from start to finish. If you don’t yet have significant food service experience but are extremely capable and can show a solid organizational track record in other applicable fields, we are willing to train.

For this position you must be a self-starter with excellent and consistent attention to detail, organizational integrity and emotional maturity, as well as possess a steadfast fervor for cleanliness. Additional plusses include being intrinsically motivated to seek out new and creative ways for improving the multiple bottom lines we value & track–be it the holistic experience of guests and staff, our work flows, or our social, ecological & economic impacts. Candidates bilingual in Spanish are also a huge plus!

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with all aspects of cafe work, including: preparing, plating and serving all food and drinks, bussing, dishwashing, cleaning and resetting tables/service areas, tracking & restocking supplies, cashiering, greeting customers, and answering guest questions

Participate in occasional cafe meetings/trainings

Participate in occasional catering events for groups and special programs

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Some experience in a food service (e.g. cafe, coffee bar, kitchen, catering or similar) expected

Ability to strictly and consistently adhere to health department standards, regulations & cleanliness

Possess valid food handler's certification or willing to become (re)certified within 2 weeks of starting date as a condition of employment

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (fluency in Spanish a huge plus)

Confident, self-motivated and self-managing with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Commitment to sustainable organic foods, passion for healthy eating and regenerative farming movement and enthusiasm for our Morton's mission to create just and sustainable communities in service to the healing of ourselves and our planet

Computer and software/tech literacy, especially Google Docs & Sheets

Ability to lift 30+ pounds

Valid CA Driver’s License, operating motor vehicle, active car insurance, and proven track record of operating a vehicle safely–part of this job may include pick-ups from various local producers. We reimburse for mileage at the federal rate when using your own vehicle for work purposes.

RECIPROCITY:

Compensation is $18-20/hour DOE, plus tips, which on average brings it to a total of $19-25/hour. In addition to wages and tips, staff enjoy a complimentary shift meal from our cafe each day worked, as well as optional espresso/tea/cold drinks and ice cream treats. Additionally, staff in good standing are offered complimentary Guest Passes for friends and family, and full-time staff with their own family may qualify to receive Season Passes for their family. Lastly, there are occasional training or enrichment opportunities offered for professional development as well.

TO APPLY FOR THIS OR ANY OF OUR OPEN POSITIONS…

Email your 1) cover letter; 2) resume; AND 3) contact information for three references to: [email protected]. Include the position name you are applying for in the subject line of the email (e.g “Jane Sanchez – Applying for Cafe Assistant Manager”).

Resumes without cover letters & references, or ones sent only as incomplete applications via social media/Indeed, will not be considered! Cover letters need only be a simple email introducing yourself and telling us why you’d like to work here, how you think you might be a good fit, and your general background, skills & availability. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with our website here first!

All of our positions are generally seasonal and part-time unless otherwise noted (some positions can be full-time for the right candidate). Most also usually require at least one weekend day per week. We prioritize hiring those who can commit to our entire guest season from May through September, most especially the high-season of June, July & August.

Also, because our small seasonal operation is so powerfully supported with a nimble, cross-trained crew (where staff are versatile across two or more roles), we prioritize hiring those who would enjoy and welcome serving in multiple spheres (e.g. Cafe & Gate, or Lifeguardian & Gate). This also keeps the work more fun and interesting for everyone while connecting us better as an entire team– a true win-win! That said, some specialty and/or assistant management-level positions are possible outside of these aforementioned parameters (e.g. within a single sphere, with limited availability, etc.) so please do still reach out if interested with questions.

:: We are a true community space committed to creating safety and welcoming for all beings. We’re dedicated to creating and supporting equal opportunities for all qualified individuals and encourage people of all races, orientations and creeds to apply, especially those traditionally and systemically marginalized by our dominant culture. We are actively seeking to increase the resiliency, wisdom and diversity of our awesome team by hiring more black, brown, indigenous and people of color, LGBTQI and all gender identities. ::
