Overview
This position offers students individual, couple, and group counseling and psychotherapy to help students deal with academic pressure and demands, social and personal problems including but not limited to; anxiety and depression, stress and overwhelm, relationship issues, alcohol and drug concerns, conflict resolution, self-esteem issues, sexuality, family and cultural challenges, and responding to crisis. The counselor assists with developing and providing outreach for counseling services and training to the campus community on areas related to the impact of social, emotional, and psychological concerns on academic performance and student's personal lives. This position assists in identifying, developing, and responding to consultation opportunities with community constituents including faculty, administrators, staff, students, and other campus community members.
Responsibilities
Individual, couple, and group counseling (in person and HIPAA compliant video sessions) and maintaining timely documentation. Conflict resolution as needed Outreach presentations and training to assist students with stress management and preventive coping strategies Assist faculty with identifying and interacting with students in need Work collaboratively with the director of student counseling, colleagues, campus departments, and student groups Primary responder for student mental health crises, hospitalizations, etc. Assist the director with development and maintenance of campus outreach programs and materials, participate in weekly case consultation, and present on mental health related issues. Assistance with other mental health compliance and accreditation requirements. Serve on committees and participate in Student Affairs meetings and activities.
Qualifications
Must hold a minimum of a master's degree in a relevant field, including counseling, psychology, or social work. A degree must have been earned from a college or university that is fully accredited by a regional accrediting body. Must be currently licensed to practice psychotherapy in the state of California (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, LCP) Five years' clinical experience is preferred with progressive clinical and administrative experience. Ability to apply clinical principles and the practice of counseling and psychotherapy to a wide range of personal, emotional, and practical problems. Ability to offer a wide range of clinical approaches, and having flexibility in clinical techniques to accommodate varying needs of students. Ability to accommodate and work with a varied and changing weekly clinical schedule. Competence in offering both psychotherapy and personal counseling as appropriate depending on the client's presenting issues and needs. Strong administration, communication (oral and written), clinical, consultation, planning, programming, and interpersonal skills. Competence working with diverse groups of highly stressed students Possess experience in providing services which support the mission of an active university counseling center Commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations (racial/ethnic, LGBTQIA, ability, gender, SES, etc.) Ability to understand and model the importance of a healthy work-life balance Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and express those recommendations and observations to interdisciplinary colleagues. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Calming professional demeanor yet able to enter and act effectively in a situation of student crisis. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, faculty, staff, parents, other members of the university community, regulatory agencies, and other constituents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Non-reporting support resource under the Clery Act.
