Position Summary
The Janitor position is responsible for providing students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work, learn, and develop. This position will be primarily located at the Lower/Middle School campus located in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills, but will occasionally need to support the Upper School campus in Lafayette.
The position will be Monday through Friday, 2:00 pm to 10:30pm, with occasional weekend work required to assist with events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Performs routine janitor duties primarily at a designated school site;
● Operates a variety of custodial equipment, such as vacuums, mops, blowers, buffer/scrubber
machines, carpet cleaners, and various hand and power tools.
● Cleans classrooms, lounges, offices, kitchens, hallways, and other facilities as assigned; dusts and
polishes furniture and woodwork; empties waste receptacles and replaces liners; mops spills; removes gum and debris; powerwash animal droppings; replaces light bulbs as needed.
● Cleans and disinfects facilities, including sinks, toilets, and urinals; replenishes supplies in restrooms; cleans mirrors, tile, walls, doors, and windows; unclogs drains and toilets as needed.
● Locks and unlocks doors and gates as appropriate; turns lights on and off; sets alarms; maintains
security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; raises and lowers flags.
● Sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums, shampoos, and spot cleans rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, and other work areas.
● Monitors and assists in maintaining inventory levels of custodial supplies; assists with ordering and
receiving supplies.
● Sweeps, blows, and picks up paper and other debris from floors, grounds, walkways, and areas adjacent to campus buildings and site facilities.
● Moves and arranges furniture; picks up and distributes supplies and equipment as requested.
● Set up or take down furniture and equipment for various activities and events
● Perform delivery tasks between the two campus
● Identifies and reports maintenance and repair needs and problems; reports vandalism and safety,
sanitary, and fire hazards to appropriate staff; responds to emergency custodial requests.
● Able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
● Performs related duties as assigned
Ability to:
● Perform routine custodial duties to maintain assigned work area in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
● Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
● Work at heights (ladders, scaffolds, roofs, etc.)
● Operate a variety of custodial equipment.
● Move and arrange furniture and equipment.
● Use email and Google Suite for daily tasks.
● Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
● Learn, understand, and apply pertinent policies, work standards, and health and safety regulations.
● Maintain routine files and records.
● Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
● Use tact, initiative, prudence, and judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
● Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
● Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
● Complete any required trainings for position
Qualifications:
● Equivalent to a high school diploma
● One (1) year of janitorial, maintenance, or grounds-keeping work, or related experience preferably in a school setting
● Valid CA Driver’s License
Working Conditions:
● Employees work in an office, classroom, or outdoor environment with moderate to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperature conditions, inclement weather conditions, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, cleaning agents and chemicals, fumes, dust, and odors, and may be exposed to blood and body fluids while performing cleaning duties.
Physical Requirements:
● Mobility to work in and around standard Bentley offices and buildings; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch,grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend ladders; to operate varied hand and power tools and custodial equipment.
● Strength and stamina to perform medium to heavy physical work; to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
● Vision to inspect assigned work areas and to read printed materials.
● Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
● Finger dexterity to operate custodial equipment.
Pay Range:
Bentley uses a competitive salary scale, which takes into account experience, education, and skill level. The starting salary we reasonably expect to pay for this position ranges from $22.00 - $25.00 per hour.
