Job Description:
The Student and Academic Services team seeks a visionary Student Financial Services Director and University Bursar to lead the strategic management of the university's student financial services and programs while upholding and enhancing the high level of service expected by students, parents, and key stakeholders. This role oversees the billing and collection of over $1.2 billion in student accounts receivable, encompassing tuition, financial aid disbursements, housing, meal plans, and various student fees, as well as managing a $35 million portfolio of student loan receivables and collections. A key advocate for student financial wellness, the director will play a leadership role in the university’s Mind Over Money program. Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Student and Academic Services and University Registrar, with a dotted line to the Executive Director of Financial Compliance and Operations, the Director/Bursar will collaborate with senior management to shape long-term financial strategies, policies, and institutional planning.
This role also involves leading the Student Financial Services team, evolving its programs, maintaining robust internal controls, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations related to student aid, data privacy, tax collection, and banking. As a leader in the national higher education financial services field, Stanford’s Director/Bursar will actively contribute to shaping best practices and policies in student financial services.

Designing, establishing, and maintaining clear roles and an effective organizational structure to achieve the organization's goals, while overseeing the recruitment, training, supervision, coaching, and evaluation of staff.

Operations & Compliance
Continuously assessing and refining the delivery of services to students, parents, alumni, academic departments, and colleagues by leveraging technology, establishing business policies, enhancing communication, and evaluating staff performance.
Designing and establishing robust programs to maintain a strong system of internal controls that protect and steward university resources.
Enforcing policies related to the billing and collection of university tuition and fees while ensuring accountability among Student Services staff and campus partners.
Proactively working with internal and external systems to ensure that PeopleSoft and other enterprise systems effectively support the student financial business, functions, and mission of the Bursar’s Office.
Serving as a liaison with university colleagues in academic departments, Financial Aid Offices, the Registrar’s Office, the Controller’s Office, the Office of the Treasurer, the Student Services Center, the Budget Office, Student Life Offices, and other key stakeholders to ensure Student Financial Services is competently and proactively managing programs and services that address student financial needs.
Exhibiting exceptional collaboration, accountability, and leadership when engaging with staff, departments, senior management, external vendors, and contractors, while ensuring operational transparency and fostering clear channels for feedback and engagement.
Strategy & Innovation
Directing high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects, championing university initiatives, and driving the development and implementation of strategic projects.
Leading, executing, and communicating operational and long-range budgets, forecasting, and strategy while directing business operations and administrative functions.
Identifying and resolving strategic challenges that extend beyond the immediate school or unit, with potential university-wide impact.
Making strategic decisions through complex, comprehensive analyses and high-level financial modeling, providing critical insights and context to support senior leadership decisions.
Providing strategy, vision, and direction with broad scope and impact, making recommendations, and influencing university finance and accounting policy issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree and eight years relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
In-depth knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), internal controls and auditing, management of accounting, financial or higher education operations.
Advanced knowledge of PeopleSoft, Oracle, or other business financial systems.
Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex accounting and financial information.
Strong leadership skills, previous experience in strategic management and leading large multi-functional teams, including problem-solving, conflict resolution, utilization of technology to support services and knowledge of the programs and services in higher education related to financing an educational experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Five years of direct experience managing a Student Financial Services organization for an R1 research university.
CPA
Proven ability to direct complex projects with strategic partners
Proven ability to advocate for funding and other resources in a campus setting
Experience managing or integrating with a campus financial wellness program
