Come join The Crucible as our Accounting Manager for the opportunity to use your accounting and finance skills in service to a fantastic arts education nonprofit located in West Oakland!

Our Accounting Manager supports the Executive Director to provide accurate and timely financial information for key business decisions and assists in the maintenance of operational policies and practices. This role is deeply knowledgeable of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all applicable regulations including those set forth by the Federal Accounting Standards Board such as FASB 117, and legal rules and regulations for nonprofit operations. It is responsible for the payroll function and the management of The Crucible’s payroll system. You must be able to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously, be highly detail-oriented, and well-organized.

The Accounting Manager assumes overall responsibility for day-to-day accounting and payroll function, ensuring smooth and efficient operations and financial management of the organization. Primary responsibilities are focused on accurate and timely accounting of transactions, payroll processing, program support, and financial reporting

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or related field or equivalent.

5+ years of experience in a similar position

Knowledge of GAAP/FASB requirements.

Non-profit accounting experience preferred, but not required

Experience with general ledger account management, account reconciliation, account analysis, and preparation of financial statements.

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficient with QuickBooks.

Advanced proficiency in processing payroll, preferably using Paylocity HRIS

Effective communicator utilizing active listening skills and clear verbal and written communication.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills as well as the ability to see the big picture while understanding the details involved and the ramifications of the decisions made.

Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.

Exercises excellent judgment in handling confidential information and other potentially-sensitive matters.

Comfortable spending time working both onsite at The Crucible and working remotely

Strong motivation and ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and assignments.

Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to and appreciation for diverse viewpoints, different communication styles, and a wide range of diverse colleagues.

Valid California driver’s license with an insurable driving record.

Ability to complete California DOJ LiveScan for youth-serving organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

Proven managing budgets of over $2M

Previous leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, preferably in the education, arts or social service organization

Physical Requirements

This position is primarily located in an office environment. Able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

Stand, sit, kneel, walk, bend, and perform repetitive motions for the duration of an eight (8) hour shift.

Able to operate standard office equipment including computers, keyboard, phones, POS machines, and printers.

Traverse safely throughout the entirety of the facility, including climbing a flight of stairs.

Safely lift, move, and transport items weighing up to 25 lbs.

Communicate in a clear speaking voice in person, over the phone and during video conferences.

Complete COVID-19 primary vaccination series and most recent vaccination booster available.

Benefits & Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position based in Oakland, CA. Our work environment is casual, upbeat, professional, and fun. This position is scheduled Monday through Fridays, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. The non-negotiable starting pay for this position is $81,300 annualized. Full-time employees are eligible to participate in benefits the first of the month following 30 days of service. Benefits include:

● Medical, dental and vision coverage at 50% for employees

● Generous leaves of absence! Accrue up to 10 days of paid vacation in your first year AND separate paid sick leave based upon your hours of service. The Crucible currently celebrates 11 paid holidays!
