Job SummaryA change in title for the Traffic Painter classification to Traffic Signs and Markings Technician is anticipated subject to City Council approval. DEFINITION Installs and maintains parking and traffic control signs. Lays out and paints pavement markings, curb zones, parking lot spaces, and street lines using a Thermoplastic Machine, spray equipment, stencils, and related equipment.SUPERVISIONWorks under the general supervision of the Traffic Operations Supervisor. Receives work direction from the Lead Traffic Signs and Markings Technician Painter for daily work assignments and coordinated work. Detailed instructions are frequently provided and work is regularly reviewed. Coordinates and monitors the work activities of Trade Interns and as-needed staff, as assigned.Representative DutiesMeasures and lays out areas to erect or place signs per assigned work orders and verbal instructions.Installs & removes sign posts and associated base or foundation using a variety of hand, power and/or motorized equipment to dig post holes, pour concrete, place asphalt, and install sign posts. Operates a bucket truck and uses ladders to remove and install signs.Measures and lays out areas to be painted which include crosswalks and curb zones. Performs related pavement lettering.Paints and installs linear and transverse markings on City streets, City-owned parking facilities, and various bus, loading and safety zones using a Thermoplastic Machine, stencils and spray equipment. Applies thermoplastic preform pavement markings.Operates equipment to grind off existing pavement markings.Mixes paint. Cleans and maintains spray paint equipment and brushes. Assists skilled trades with large or complex projects such as installing or removing rapid flashing beacons and speed feedback signs. Assists workers from other work units on assigned projects related to traffic markings and signage. Prepares and maintains logs and records. Utilizes a utility database system to enter and retrieve data, prepare work orders and to record and track completed service delivery.Prepares tools, equipment, and materials for assigned work. Maintains stored materials in organized manner. Experience: Two years of recent, paid work experience performing traffic sign installation and maintenance, including street painting. Desirable Qualifications:Public sector experience is desirable. Licenses and Certificates:Possession of a valid class C driver license.Possession of a valid level I Signs and Markings certificate from the Traffic Control Supervisors Association (T.C.S.A.) or the International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) must be obtained within one year from date of hire. Possession of a valid level II Signs and Markings certificate from the Traffic Control Supervisors Association (T.C.S.A.) or the International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) is desirable.WORKING CONDITIONS:The work is regularly performed outdoors and requires regular exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Moving objects, noise, dirt, chemicals and oils may be present as may be conditions associated with the regular handling of paint products. Exposure to vibrations and dust are frequently encountered. Work is regularly performed on a ladder or from a lift bucket extended to various heights.
