Art From Scrap (AFS) is a retail store located in downtown Santa Barbara. The store operates by accepting donations from businesses and homes in our community, and providing a space for patrons to discover these unique finds and treasures that would otherwise be sent to the landfill. Art From Scrap is a program of Explore Ecology, a non profit providing environmental education to the Santa Barbara County community.
The AFS Cashier & Store Associate’s primary role is to operate the cash register, help maintain the store and provide a smooth and pleasant experience for customers. Main duties include: assisting customers on the floor, operating the cash register, organizing and maintaining the store retail space, and helping with opening and closing tasks when relevant.
Hourly Pay: $16.00 per hour
Role and Responsibilities
Customer Service
Greet patrons when entering or leaving the establishment
Provide courteous, friendly and efficient customer service
Provide customers with accurate, positive information about the Art From Scrap Creative Reuse Store and Explore Ecology’s programs
Guide customers and provide relevant information, resolve or escalate customer complaints
Cash Register & Checkout
Customer checkout: ring up sales, bag items, collect payments, issue change, and give receipts
Operate the cash register: handle cash or credit transactions with customers using cash register system
Count money in cash drawers at the beginning/end of shift to ensure amounts are correct
Other Store Duties
Accept donations during scheduled drop off times
Process items according to AFS pricing procedures
Ensure item pricing is correct: research items to allow for accurate pricing and file items in appropriate locations on the sales floor
Communicate with the team in a productive and professional manner
Work Environment
Standing, bending, and stooping, for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours)
Extensive contact with the public
Unassisted heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs.)
Comfortable interacting with children
Scheduling
Shift Work Exclusively.
Part Time: approximately 20-25 hours per week, Tuesday - Saturday / Must be able to work on weekends, as scheduled.
Additional Qualifications and Education Requirements
High School or GED preferred
Preferred Skills
Previous customer service experience
Technical experience operating a cash register
Basic knowledge of art supplies and materials
