This OpportunityWSP is looking for a Senior Vice President/ Vertical Transportation Technical Excellence (TEC) Lead for our Northern California Transportation Business Line. Serving as the Vertical Transportation TEC Lead the candidate will play a key leadership role in the California Region as we continue to strengthen and expand our Transportation practice, promote collaboration and teamwork with a focus to build our local team, and drive solutions in support our clients, and communities. This position can be based out of our any of WSP's Northern California offices: San Francisco-CA, Roseville/Sacramento-CA, Oakland-CA or San Jose-CA .The Vertical Transportation TEC Lead will assist with technical project delivery, assist in developing and implementing marketing strategies, support business service delivery through WSP’s strategy focused on four pillars of success: Clients, Expertise, People & Culture and Operational Excellence, and assist in delivering services and solutions to bring value to our clients.The Northern California Transportation Business Line is broadening its expertise to further support our clients, deliver solutions, and lead innovation in the Vertical Transportation sector, encompassing design of complex systems. The Vertical Transportation TEC Lead is a newly imagined role that will serve as the external face of Northern California Transportation’s Vertical Transportation market service and may bring Regional or National Leaders to support growing the business to meet annual tactical and long-term strategic objectives.The candidate will provide direct leadership of a multi-discipline technical excellence team, provide leadership to ensure technical practices such as mechanical and electrical engineering, and vertical transportation solutions including technical deliverables and programs are delivered with quality and demonstrates technical excellence. The candidate may lead or assist on technical proposals and business development activities, attend, or facilitate internal or external client meetings, perform project management of projects and assigned staff, design simple to complex projects, coordinate among various disciplines, and develop contract documents. Optimizes the client and employee experience through regular review and implements process improvements and provide leadership to ensure technical practices and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards, and which elevates the district’s technical excellence.

Focuses on innovation and enhancing mechanical and electrical systems including vertical transportation technical solutions for transportation and infrastructure market services including aviation and others such as property and buildings, federal programs, advisory services, and project management/construction management.

Focuses on the latest advancements in vertical transportation systems and technology to deliver innovative, cost-efficient and integrated applications to meet project and clients’ needs.

Drives technical excellence, quality and optimization for mechanical and electrical design, delivery, quality management and assurance.

Responsible for subject matter expertise innovation and administration and ensures technical and corporate compliance with standards.

Collaborate with region leaders, technical excellence leaders and project/program management teams and other area leaders to establish quality and sustainable standards.

Supports the development of local growth, forecast and business development strategy in collaboration with District, Region and National Business Line Leaders.

Resolves conflict and other internal/external issues that may arise in the office, amongst WSP’s client base, or on projects.

Collaborate with regional, district leaders and other area leaders to strategically drive the business with focus on business growth, manage project performance, oversee overhead expenditures, and meet operational, business performance, and financial metrics.

Support the overall long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of work for WSP in assigned area of responsibility, with a focus on Vertical Transportation opportunities in all disciplines (planning, design, strategic consulting, and program/construction management).

Expertise

Provide leadership to ensure technical practices and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards, and which elevates the region’s technical excellence.

Provide proactive and strategic leadership for the vertical transportation, mechanical and electrical discipline and function, offering direction, expertise, and support to ensure project and work site deliverables are successfully achieved within the business sector.

Perform high-level review and approval of design plans and specifications, integrated management plans, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and engineering practice and standards.

Lead larger-scale discipline on more complex projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking timelines, hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.

Responsible for the pursuit and development of business and the successful execution of work for current and potential work within a geography specifically for the large projects within the area.

Lead technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings.

Responsible for the profitable performance of the individual projects and the successful completion of the projects within the specified area.

Assist with the preparation of an annual update to business tactical action plans within the specified area.

Meet with various public or private entities or individuals to discuss issues relating to a variety of design/construction challenges and programs.

Ensure that discipline certifications, accreditations, and value proposition is developed and continuously improved.

Conduct needs analyses and client value surveys to align the discipline’s function with business and project strategy, identifying and addressing any skill gaps or risks within the sector business operations.

Schedule technical discipline meetings, providing updates and recommendations to ensure that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to inculcate discipline expertise and innovation into project work.

Serve as one of the discipline’s lead representatives/liaisons to a variety of external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry-related groups, and various government and community entities.

Develop and inform proposal and project scopes, timelines, pricing, and budgetary metrics – and accountable for planning, development and management of projects in compliance with all applicable City/State/Federal codes and regulations, and in accordance with all acceptable engineering practices.

Interpret and summarize data, including reports and documents that result in sound conclusions.

Provide verbal and/or written inputs to multi-disciplinary project teams and contribute to providing high level strategic advice to clients.

Develop a client base for providing vertical transportation, mechanical and electrical services including identifying additional business development opportunities, and cross-selling of other WSP capabilities.

Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development.

Remain current in latest discipline techniques and practices.

Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide “trusted advisor” service and future ready solutions for clients.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Leverages our broad technical experience to enhance current and new service offerings with focus on transportation and infrastructure opportunities in all disciplines (planning, design, project/program management).

Collaborates with the Region Business Line Leader, local business and district leadership in the development of new and emerging innovations to remain the trusted thought leaders in our industry.

Supports advancement of the strategic direction of the district and region in the location of responsibility for sustained and continued growth consistent within the context of the strategic plan.

Who You AreRequired Qualifications

Bachelor’s in Mechanical, Electrical or relevant Engineering Degree.

Minimum of 15 years of relevant post education experience in learned discipline.

Professional Engineer (P.E.) License in CA.

Advanced proficiency with Vertical Transportation and mechanical or electrical principles, practices, process, design/build, standard of care, and project work-related issues.

Strong working knowledge of relevant construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements, and the business impact upon the organization.

Advance proficiency with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles related to area of expertise, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.

Advanced proficiency with office automation, discipline-specific design software, technology, math principles, graphics, spreadsheets, and tools.

Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

Demonstrated experience of leadership, personal accountability, persistent and goal oriented.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.

Ability to innovate and re-think the conventional approach to client and employee engagement.

Tactical lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.

Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, regulators, and company wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Engineering.

Strong experience in managing the review and approval of documents and discipline-specific deliverables, certifications, processes, and plans in a multi-project environment is highly desirable.
