Job Description:
Our Giving Kitchen San Diego, located in Poway, CA, is looking for a lead chef with a passion to serve the community and to help those that are food insecure or needy. The lead chef will be responsible for planning and executing menus for our 90-minute event sessions and will help guide our volunteers in how to properly handle and package the food prepared. The candidate must have strong culinary skills and be able to work with and mentor an intern or kitchen assistant. The ideal candidate should have experience in catering, possess excellent communication and time management skills, and be able to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. In addition, they should have a love for cooking, strong technical skills, and an understanding of food hygiene and safety regulations. The candidate should also be ready to join an upbeat and positive team, be self-motivated, flexible and willing to learn.
Responsibilities:
Using current recipe book, plan, prepare and cook 100-300 meals per event session
Work closely with assistant/sous chef to plan, prepare and cook 100-300 meals
Manage kitchen staff and delegate tasks effectively
Ensure that all food is prepared to the highest standards of taste
Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment adhering to safety and health regulations
Manage inventory and order supplies as needed
Work closely with front of house event manager to ensure timely preparation of meal components to bring out to volunteers during 90-minute event sessions
Create and test new recipes
Handle any culinary related issues or emergencies that arise during an event
Train and mentor any interns or junior kitchen staff
Unpack, organize and properly store all raw ingredients
Must be able to lift 50 pounds
