Outside Machinist Apprentice - Career Opportunity - San Diego, CAJob Description
The Outside Machinist Apprentice will assist in various machining tasks, ensuring that all operations run smoothly and efficiently.
You will support machinists in setting up and operating machining equipment, preparing materials and tools, cleaning and maintaining machinery, and transporting materials.
Additionally, you will perform basic machining tasks under supervision, follow safety protocols, and assist in the inspection and testing of machined parts to ensure quality standards are met.
Responsibilities
Assist machinists in setting up and operating machining equipment.
Prepare materials and tools needed for machining tasks.
Clean and maintain machinery and work areas.
Transport materials and components to and from workstations.
Perform basic machining tasks under the supervision of experienced machinists.
Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
Help with the inspection and testing of machined parts to ensure quality standards are met.
Essential Skills
Basic understanding of machining tools and equipment.
Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
Good communication and organizational skills.
Physical ability to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects.
Attention to detail and precision in work.
Basic math skills for measuring and calculating dimensions.
Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and technical drawings.
Familiarity with safety standards and procedures in a machining environment.
Basic computer skills for data entry and record-keeping.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with blueprint reading and machining.
Knowledge of shipyard, boiler, pumps, shaft, valves, hydraulics, ship repair, shaft repair.
Experience as an Outside Machinist, Marine Mechanic, or Machinist.
Experience with shafting and overhauling.
Work Environment
Work will be performed at BAE Systems aboard the USS Halsey, USS Mobile, and USS Green Bay. Work will also be performed at NBSD aboard the USS Russell.
