Hammer Prep is looking to hire tutors who can help students with ACT, SAT, and AP exams (especially Chem, Bio, and Physics).

Tutoring takes place at our office in Sorrento Valley. Tutors set their schedules and typically meet with 3+ students per day. Students typically prefer to meet between 3pm and 8pm on Monday through Thursday, as well throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. It's critical that tutors are available at least 3 weekdays and one weekend day each week.

Requirements:

Willingness to tutor one weekend day and 3+ weekdays

Ability to tutor 10-20 hours during our peak tutoring hours: M-F 3pm to 8pm and Sa-Su 9am to 6pm

A bachelor's degree

Commitment to helping students perform at the highest level

Strong interest in coaching and teaching

Ability to manage client scheduling and parent communication

Ability to score high on a qualifying test

Perks:

Paid training + ongoing support

Flexible schedule

All sessions are 1-on-1, which allows tutors to optimize learning

Compensation:

Part-time tutors typically start at $35-$40 per hour + $2-$10/hr bonus. Your starting rate depends on previous experience, subjects you can tutor, diagnostic test results, and feedback from training.

First-year tutors will be eligible for raises once specific milestones have been reached. Examples of milestones can include tutoring for 250 hours, and/or coaching a handful of students to exceptional official SAT/ACT scores, and/or earning several referrals.

Full-time tutors (30+ hours per week with students) are eligible for our benefits that include health care, wellness and phone stipends, and 401(k). Hammer Prep currently pays 100% of full-time employee's health care and 3% to of earnings to employee's 401(k). Our most prolific tutors earn more than $100,000 per year.

How does Hammer compare to other tutoring companies?

All of our tutoring is individualized to each student.

Most of our tutoring takes place at the office.

We believe that tutoring is a profession.

Our culture is fun, funny, and supportive.

We refuse to be average.

Can I work remotely?

No. All first year tutors will need to work from our office in Sorrento Valley, CA. We've found that our tutors who train during the first year at the office are more spirited and effective.

Must I have prior tutoring experience?

No. In fact, some of our best tutors had ZERO tutoring experience. The right personality and passion for teaching/coaching are essential to success. That's why we provide all new tutors with training. You will be required to attend weekly training sessions. The tutors who learn to become great tutors answer yes to the following questions.

Do you love teaching your friends and family members about new topics?

Do you love learning?

Were you a better student than most of your peers at school?

Are you okay with a 3pm to 9pm work day?

Are you okay working on Saturday or Sunday?

Is this job part-time or full-time?

This is a part-time job with the potential to reach full-time. Part-time tutors assist students for 15+ hours per week (career tutors assist students 30+ hours each week). Since most tutors don't start with students until 3p during the school year (Sep-June), tutors have plenty of time to pursue other interests.

Can you guarantee a specific number of hours each week?

No, but our tutors consistently fill their schedules. We are a small organization (less than 12 tutors) that has a strong reputation (22+ years in business) among schools and families throughout San Diego. If you're great at tutoring, we're confident you'll fill your schedule within a few months.

Can I set my own schedule?

We ask our tutors to provide available tutoring hours at least 3 days each week, as well as one weekend day. Most students prefer to meet weekdays between 3p and 8p and throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. We will help you fill your schedule of available tutoring hours. Only apply if you have afternoon and evening time available for tutoring on weekdays. A typical tutor schedule, for example, is Sunday through Thursday, we encourage you to apply.

Does this job have growth potential?

Absolutely. Several of our part-time tutors are now career tutors with full benefits. We encourage all team members to cross train. Our most popular tutors can provide tutoring for ACT, SAT, AP exams, several high school classes, and college application essays.
