We're seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented professional to join our hard-working team in Poway. This role focuses on accounting and payroll responsibilities with a clear track toward a Construction Controller position.
What You’ll Do:
Payroll Responsibilities (Weekly Process)
- Full-cycle in-house payroll for private and public works (including certified payroll).
- Process cloud-based timekeeping, daily reports, and payroll tax deposits.
- Manage direct deposits, employee deductions, and benefit payments.
- Ensure public works compliance: certified payroll reporting (LCP Tracker, DIR eCpr), wage determinations, apprentice ratios, etc.
Accounting Responsibilities
- Manage general ledger and oversee accurate recording of financial transactions.
- Process and reconcile accounts payable: subcontractor billings, vendor invoices, overhead expenses, and credit card transactions.
- Ensure subcontractor billing and compliance is aligned with accounting standards and company policies.
- Support contract administration and cost control documentation.
- Assist with corporate insurance renewals and client pre-qualification packages.
- Process payroll-related compliance tasks such as garnishments, EDD responses, and onboarding cost tracking.
Office Management and Technology Support
- Oversee daily office operations, ensuring efficient administrative workflows.
- Coordinate IT needs: server, hardware, tablets, and phones.
- Liaise with IT consultants for system upgrades, licensing, and cyber compliance.
- Organize office staff meetings and mandatory training certifications (WVPP, Harassment Prevention).
- DOT/BIT compliance (FMCSA, Drug & Alcohol Program, CHP inspections)
- Assist with both urgent, unplanned projects and long-term strategic endeavors across the organization.
Additional Qualifications – Controller Track (Preferred but Not Required):
This controller track is intended to be a hands-on leadership role, requiring active involvement in daily accounting functions and financial operations.
- Monthly in-house financial statements including WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules.
- Construction-specific accounting and AIA billing formats.
- Insurance claims management and audit preparation.
- Bank line of credit renewals and reporting.
- Coordination with CPA on year-end tax planning and preparation of reviewed financial statements.
- Human resources oversight (compliance, handbooks, benefits, and onboarding).
- Policy and procedure development to improve operations and accountability.
- Comfortable in a leadership role, helping to shape internal controls and team direction.
Who You Are:
- Experienced: 4+ years in accounting and payroll processing. Construction industry experience preferred. Controller experience is a strong plus.
- Analytical: Possess strong skills and a solid understanding of accounting principles to analyze financial data effectively.
- Organized: Skilled at multitasking, with excellent attention to detail.
- Tech-Savvy: Fluent in MS Office, accounting software, and construction payment platforms (Textura, Pro-Core, GC Pay).
- Problem-Solver: A self-starter who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Collaborative: Builds strong working relationships across internal and external teams.
- Compliance-Focused: Strong knowledge of CA labor law, payroll regulations, and construction reporting.
- Trustworthy: Must pass a pre-employment drug screen (excluding THC) and background check.

- Competitive base salary range of $85,000 - $110,000 per year. Final salary will be determined based on factors like the candidate's skills, qualifications, experience, and how well they align with the role and company culture.
