Please do not apply unless you meet ALL of the following requirements:
1) must be a licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of California;
2) must be interested in PART-TIME work (full-time is NOT offered at this time);
3) must be available 3-4x a week for the entire six-week training period (and then 2-3x a week thereafter).
Hearing Officers conduct probable cause hearings in emergency departments or facilities designated by each county to provide intensive treatment for patients involuntarily detained due to being a danger to others, a danger to themselves, or gravely disabled as a result of a mental health disorder or impairment by chronic alcoholism. Hearing Officers may also conduct capacity hearings pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code §§5332-5334. Hearing Officer applicants must be active members in good standing with the California State Bar. Hearings are conducted during regular business hours and are held remotely using Zoom or other secure video conference platforms. Hearing Officers should have solid critical thinking skills, excellent listening skills, high ethical and professional standards, and be able to decide matters fairly and in accordance with the law, regardless of the parties involved. Hearing Officers should have an appropriate temperament and demeanor that is akin to what is expected of a judge, including the ability to respond in a calm and rational manner when under pressure in difficult and unexpected situations. Hearing decisions are issued immediately after each hearing.
This is a part-time position. All necessary training provided. For the paid training period, we will need you to provide at least three to four days of availability per week for approximately six. Training may be at a reduced rate for approximately the first three weeks, but depending on performance, the rate will increase to the full regular pay rate sometime after three weeks. We will consider all levels of experience; experience in mental health is not required. Submission to background investigation is required upon conditional offer of employment.
