SALARY INFORMATION

$4,042.00 - $5,159.00 APPROXIMATE MONTHLY / $23.32 - $29.76 APPROXIMATE HOURLY

STIPENDS AND ALLOWANCES

EPA 609 CERTIFICATION STIPEND: An employee in the classification of Fleet Mechanic, who has obtained Refrigeration Certification (EPA 609) and who is assigned by the department head as part of his or her regular duties to perform refrigeration related work shall receive an additional five percent (5%) of base pay.

TOOL ALLOWANCE: The County will provide a tool allowance on or about January 1 of each year per eligible employee then employed. The amount shall be $1,000. Such allowance is made with the understanding that each employee under this program shall be solely responsible for replacing or updating his/her own hand tools. Eligible employees are those who regularly perform maintenance and repair duties on County vehicles and/or stationary equipment and are assigned to Department of Public Works and Fleet Management Division.

BOOT ALLOWANCE: The County will provide a boot allowance of $250 per year on or about January 1 of each year per eligible employee then employed. Such allowance is made with the understanding that each employee under this program shall be solely responsible for his/her own safe footwear.

Public Works vision is to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective facilities and services to the residents of Shasta County.

Fleet Management maintains vehicles for the bulk of Shasta County departments with a fleet size of 380 vehicles.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, to perform preventive maintenance and make mechanical repairs to automotive and related County equipment; and if assigned to install special equipment which may include communications and other electronics devices; and to perform related work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate would possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications and/or vehicle manufacture certifications, as well as a minimum of 1 year (preferably 2 years’) experience diagnosing and repairing both gasoline and diesel engines in an Independent or dealership repair facility. This individual will have a self-sufficient demeanor with the ability to efficiently work independently. Multitasking and prioritization skills are essential to manage a diverse and high-volume workload. A journey- level knowledge of diagnosing and troubleshooting automotive repairs, and the maintenance of various vehicles including gasoline and diesel engines, electronics and customized parts fabrication is vital to this role.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under supervision, installs and removes electronic communications equipment, computer and telephone cables, and related equipment in county vehicles. Mounts control heads, speakers, sirens, microphones, switches, antennas, light bars, strobe lights, and spotlights in above-named equipment by cutting and drilling holes and bolting equipment in place. Tests and repairs microphones, speakers and related equipment by replacing cords, soldering connections, cleaning points, and replacing cartridges, capacitors, resistors, and transistors. Must be experienced in servicing vehicles to one ton. Inspects County automotive equipment to determine corrective action needed; services vehicles by lubricating, changing oil, filling brake master cylinders and replacing brake pads and shoes, turning brake drums and rotors, checking transmissions; inspects, diagnosis, and locates mechanical difficulties on automotive equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs; adjusts and tunes engines, checks and repairs differentials, clutches, wheel and axle bearings, replaces ignition parts, cleans and repairs carburetors and fuel injection systems; replaces or repairs faulty parts including, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and maintains special equipment on certain vehicles; writes repair orders, and maintains work, time and materials records.

Uses equipment such as an AMMCO brake rotor and drum lathe, drill press, bench grinder, L-head grinder, Cut-off saw, Sawzall, volt/ohm meter, scan tools and electric and air drills. Fabricates brackets, covers and containers to fit various vehicles; is familiar with a Lincoln stick arc welder, Lincoln wire feed M.I.G. welder, Lincoln M.I.G. aluminum wire spool gun, oxy./acetylene welder and cutting torch. Must be proficient with the above welders making butt, fillet, and vertical welds.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:

Knowledge of: Must be knowledgeable in vehicle electronics, diagnosis, the use of scan tools and general automotive repair. Knowledge of safety techniques involved in mounting and wiring equipment. Ability to work without direct supervision in awkward and confined spaces. Ability to design and fabricate mounting brackets and measure sheet metal surfaces. Ability to remove a motor vehicle head liner, dash, interior trim, door panels, kick panels, carpeting and reinstall without damaging or disfiguring fixtures. Familiar with the operating principals of gasoline engines and repair of vehicles and equipment; record keeping and reporting procedures; safe work practices.

Ability to: Inspect automotive equipment to locate difficulties and estimate cost and time of repairs; perform a variety of repairs on automotive equipment; use a variety of tools and equipment with skill; maintain a variety of shop and repair records; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain cooperative relationships with others. These standards are typically attained with one year of journey-level experience as an automotive Mechanic.
