SUMMARY:

Under supervision of a site principal and day-to-day work coordination and scheduling of a credentialed teacher

or specialized program lead (such as in ASES or other extended day programs), the Paraprofessional assists

individuals and/or groups of students in the instructional program in a classroom environment and/or on the

playground. Employees in this classification may also be assigned to monitor student behavior in the cafeteria,

on the playground, or in the bus area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

— Assists students by reviewing and reinforcing basic instruction and acceptable, positive behaviors assigned

by a classroom teacher, site administrator, or specialized program lead.

— Assists small groups of students in teacher-directed learning activities, assisting individuals as needed.

— Assists teacher by having students daily work ready for each class.

— Assesses student needs and progress under teacher direction.

— Implements planned programs of team sports, physical fitness (e.g. SPARKS) and games with groups of

students for physical education activities.

— Monitors, supports and assists with positive behavior support plans as directed by certificated staff.

— Assists teacher in the implementation of planned programs for student physical fitness; monitor activities to

ensure student safety and well-being.

— Follows district guidelines to protect student health, safety, and well-being.

— Monitors student activities on the playground, in the cafeteria and in the bus area.

— Performs routine clerical and record-keeping tasks such as taking roll, collecting monies, completing forms,

correcting papers, recording grades, duplicating and distributing instructional materials, etc

— Operates equipment such as computers, copiers, laminators, audio-visual aids, etc.

— Participates in conferences and planning sessions and daily/periodic classroom meetings and briefings with

the teacher; attends required inservice training.

— Assists the teacher in accommodating students who have disabilities as necessary.

— May administer first aid as necessary

— Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS:

(At time of application)

KNOWLEDGE OF:

— Mathematics, reading and writing sufficient to pass a proficiency test equivalent to that required of high

school graduates.

— Basic child development characteristics.

— Appropriate behaviors in interacting with students

ABILITY TO:

— Assist in the instruction of math, reading, and writing and applications applying technology tools to

learning.

— Follow and carry out written and oral instructions.

— Learn and implement teacher-directed educational techniques.

— Learn and implement teacher-directed positive behavior support plans that increase student independence,

motivation and self-esteem.

— Communicate effectively and to interact positively with students, teachers, staff members and parents.

— Participate in physical activities, to stand for long periods of time, to lift, stoop, and bend.

— Learn to operate computers and other school equipment.

— Maintain confidentiality about student records and personal information.

— Tutor individuals and/or small groups of students; ability to monitor large groups of students.

— Maintain patience, tact and self-control when students are upset and/or behaving offensively.

— Obtain first aid certification.

— (For the bilingual paraprofessional, proficiency in the primary language of students who are learning

English.)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/ OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

— High school diploma or equivalent; a passing score on an exam that tests for the knowledge of, and the

ability to assist in the teaching of, math, reading and writing

— DESIRED: Some experience working with students; an A.A. degree or two years of college, or any

combination of training and experience that would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

— Speak, read and understand sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from students,

supervisors, co-workers, the public, etc.

— Operate basic equipment such as the telephone, copier, computer, calculator, etc., except where incidental to

the position.

— Sufficient strength and agility to perform physical tasks required by the position such as bending, walking and standing while working with and assisting students.
