With our business, the supplies are taken out of the painters end after their commission. So if you can keep the cost of supplies low and plan ahead by not buying too much or too little or even buy common colors in bulk, then you will maximize your earnings. Your boss doesn't need to make extra because you saved them a few bucks by cleaning and reusing rollers, you can keep that extra yourself!
If you have a good work ethic and know how to get jobs done without delay, then this job can pay you significantly more than an hourly or daily base paying job. If you can't though, if you're the lazy guy taking 2 hours lunches and breaks anytime the boss isn't looking, then don't bother applying, as you'll find out really quick that laziness doesn't pay here!
One side benefit: working as an independent contractor, all the expenses you have for your work vehicle, any supplies you buy, any equipment you need to purchase or rent, etc. are all tax deductible. This will save you money as well, as long as you're smart about it. A smart independent contractor will pay little to no taxes.
You will need reliable transportation, all your own equipment (which isn't really that much for a painter), and experience painting. We serve most of Los Angeles County, but tend to stay around the South Bay most of the time.
