Streets Are For Everyone (often known as SAFE) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in January 2015 that aims to improve the quality of life for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers alike. SAFE addresses the problem in a holistic fashion through direct education, broad awareness campaigns, partnerships, community outreach, policy and legislation, support for those impacted, and other proven strategies.
About the Position
Are you a passionate cyclist who thrives in a collaborative environment and wants to positively impact the lives of cyclists and pedestrians across Los Angeles County? Streets Are For Everyone seeks a highly motivated Bicycle and Pedestrian Advocacy and Education Coordinator to join our team.
This full-time position is a balance between advocacy for safer and more equitable bicycle and pedestrian corridors, innovative education for students, and organizing engaging bike rides for diverse skill levels. You will also play a vital role in developing pedestrian and bicycle-friendly policies and collaborating with various stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
1) Advocacy:
- Work to improve bicycle and pedestrian planning and infrastructure around Los Angeles County.
- Advocate for bicycle-friendly and pedestrian policies and infrastructure improvements at the city and county level.
- Manage SAFE’s Bike Path Report Card project, documenting the quality of bike paths and protected bike lanes around LA County and advocating for the improvement of these paths.
2) Education: Manage the Streets, Art, SAFE high school film competition and expand its reach.
3) Lead Bike Rides: Organize and lead social rides for various skill levels, fostering a welcoming and inclusive cycling community.
4) Outreach and Engagement:
- Represent SAFE at council meetings, community events, and neighborhood meetings, promoting bicycle and pedestrian safety and improved infrastructure.
- Manage and grow SAFE’s Strava ride and run club accounts.
- Lead SAFE’s Clean Ride Crew project, which does regular clean-ups and improvements of bike paths around Los Angeles County.
5) Program Development and Management:
- Collaborate with community partners and stakeholders to identify needs and develop collaborative programs and initiatives.
- Work with SAFE staff to develop a capital fundraising strategy for bicycle and pedestrian improvements in underfunded city and county parks.
- Work with SAFE staff to identify and apply for funding for SAFE’s bicycle and pedestrian advocacy and education programs.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma (Bachelors or AA degree strongly preferred)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experienced and passionate cyclist with a strong understanding of traffic laws and safe cycling practices.
- Effective communicator: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate individuals and groups.
- Strong organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs, with a strong understanding of social media platforms and experience with Strava.
- Collaboration and teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, building strong relationships and fostering effective team dynamics.
Preferred:
- Bilingual: Spanish and English.
- Experience as a runner.
- LCI or Smart Cycling certification.
- Experience managing community-based programs.
- Public speaking experience.
- Experience submitting grants and fundraising.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.
- Ability to drive to locations as needed.
- Ability to ride a bicycle at least 25 miles.
Salary and Compensation
The starting salary is $19 per hour once done with position training, with the salary raised rapidly based on performance and available funds.
