The Redwoods Rising Forest Fellow is a two-year limited-term position that enhances the capacity of Redwoods Rising – a collaborative forest restoration effort in Redwood National and State Parks. Based in Humboldt County and working directly with partner agencies, the Fellow will work to advance the initiative by providing logistical support for the Redwoods Rising governance structure ; supporting the day-to-day activities of a team (up to 15) of Restoration Apprentices; supporting fundraising and outreach efforts; general office and administrative contributions; and other special projects related to Save the Redwoods League’s Mission

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Redwoods Rising Program Assistant (60%):

- Provides logistical, administrative, and occasional field support to Redwoods Rising working groups, specifically Steering Committee, Communications Committee, and technical advisory committees, including scheduling, notetaking, and follow-up

- Provides logistical support for in person and virtual meetings and events as directed by the Redwoods Rising Partnership Manager and Project Manager

- Oversees day-to-day administrative duties for the Redwoods Rising Partnership including managing complex calendars and coordinating high volume and reoccurring meetings

- Manages Redwoods Rising procurement system and policies by seeking and documenting appropriate approvals for all purchase requests

- Supports Save the Redwoods League McKinleyville office operations by ordering supplies and managing inventory

- Handles customer service-related tasks including following-up on phone call inquires and being an overall ambassador for the Redwoods Rising program

- Creates simple budgets and communicate basic financial information to management staff

- Articulates complex information (conversation and written correspondence) accurately ensuring all details are covered

Apprenticeship Program Coordination (35%):

Assists with planning/managing the Redwoods Rising apprenticeship program, including:

- Procures, tracks, and maintains supplies for the apprenticeship program

- Leads apprenticeship recruitment activities, including attending local career fair and making presentations at Cal Poly Humboldt and College of Redwoods

- Attends apprenticeship interviews to answer questions about the program and assist in making student selections for incoming apprenticeship cohorts

- Maintains regular in person office schedule (based out of McKinleyville, CA) to support apprentices and office administration duties

- Support in evaluation of effectiveness to specific areas and procedures related to apprenticeship program

- Consistently follows-up with apprentices to ensure that personnel needs related to safety and other needs are being met by partners

- Provides administrative and general support to students and project leads throughout the summer season related to scheduling, timekeeping, safety, and disciplinary actions

- Handles confidential and sensitive information related to the apprenticeship program

- Makes recommendations to Redwoods Rising Project Manager and Partnership Manager for ways to improve the apprenticeship program

- Provides regular written and verbal feedback related to the apprenticeship program to Redwoods Rising Partners and Save the Redwoods League Staff

- Provides field support, when needed

Public Outreach for Redwoods Rising (5%):

- Works with League and agency staff and outside consultants to develop public communications documents.

- Attends and represents Redwoods Rising at community outreach events, support events by being in person presence and coordinating tabling efforts with agency partners

- Works with League and agency staff to research and solicit funding from public and private sources

- Works with League and agency staff to deliver presentations that expand the reach of Redwoods Rising to community and other outside groups

Qualifications:

- Associate or bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience (3+ years in a position with directly transferable duties) and genuine interest in environmental conservation and natural resources

- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills required, including the ability to assemble, assess and organize data, conduct analyses, and propose clear, practical recommendations for technical issues.

- Commitment to the League’s pragmatic, non-confrontational approach to conservation.

- Self-starter, able to work independently as well as in a team, with a record of accomplishment of collaborating successfully with others in a complex environment.

- Highly organized with excellent project management skills, including the ability to establish and monitor priorities, maintain flexibility, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.

- Strong verbal communication skills, including public speaking abilities, required.

- Ability to handle multiple complex tasks under pressure and stringent time constraints.

- Proficient user of Microsoft Office computer programs and general knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Project-based contractor/vendor oversight, as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

- Occasional travel, predominantly within Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

- Some weekend and evening responsibilities, including overnight trips.

- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

- Regularly sits at a desk or workstation.

- Actively utilizes computers, telephones, and other office equipment.

- Frequently moves about and between offices to collaborate with colleagues.

- Occasionally required to hike through forest land while working off-site, including walking on uneven ground, climbing over obstacles, and accessing remote locations.

- Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

Work Schedule:

This role is hybrid with a minimum of 1-2 days onsite in our McKinleyville office per week. Our weekly in office day is Monday (when everyone living near the North Coast office is required to come in). Additional days are based on business needs.

Compensation & Benefits:

As a full-time hourly employee, you will be eligible for benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus holidays. The organization has a 35 hour work week and the pay for this position is $27.50/hour (annualized $50,000).
