California Polytechnic Humboldt University's ("Cal Poly") Department of Risk Management will be participating in the AmeriCorps' California Emergency Response Corps (CERC) program.
THIS IS A LIMITED TERM (10.5 months) FULL-TIME POSITION OF 1700 HOURS September 2024 through August 2025 depending on Member’s start date.
CERC is a statewide preparedness / response program whose goal is to help Californians become better prepared, and incumbents may be deployed to disasters such as wildfires, floods, and earthquakes. Structurally, this program is part of a larger statewide California Volunteer campaign to boost emergency preparedness in communities experiencing social isolation, poverty, or language barriers, and food insecurities.
For the 2024-2025 Academic Year, Cal Poly Humboldt may recruit and hire up to three qualified candidates.
These paid volunteer positions are not work-study positions, and are not conducive to academic success. These positions are ideal for recent graduates or for those who already reside in or in proximity of Arcata who would have an aptitude and a passion for Emergency Management, and would enjoy learning from practitioners in this profession. Enrolled Lumberjacks should not apply for these positions.
About Cal Poly Humboldt Emergency Management:
Cal Poly Humboldt Emergency Management is an "All Hazards, All Phases" Emergency Management program. As a small, but committed profession, we are dedicated to cultivating the next generation of Emergency Managers, as disasters have increased in frequency and scope.
Incumbents joining our team will embark upon an extensive training and certification curriculum that will prove beneficial for individuals seeking a career in Emergency Management, and may be assigned to three focus areas:
Planning;
Readiness and Logistics; and/or
Training and Exercise.
Incumbents will not be tasked with menial assignments, but will be expected to build upon leadership, project management, and other sophisticated transferable skills.
Emergency Services Support-Americorps
Monthly member stipend:
$2,572 monthly (before taxes)
Education Award:
$10,000 upon completion of 1,700-hour contract
Schedule:
Normal business hours 8:00am-5:00pm with some on call in the case of an emergency

AmeriCorps Member Responsibilities:
Serve 40 hours per week through contract duration
Must be available to deploy to state-wide emergency operations up to 4 times per term and; 2 weeks each as determined by California Volunteers with little to no notice.
Oversee emergency planning and preparedness programs such as Shakeout, CERT, Bigfoot Scavenger Hunt, Tsunami Week
Participate and support Campus EOC operations and training
Provide day to day support to nonprofit partner-site(s), their mission and internal programs.
Attend recurring performance check-ins with Cal Poly Supervisor
Complete mandatory training in-person or virtually as directed.
Weekly communication, documentation and timekeeping of hours and activities.
Support as needed for disaster response activities on campus and in the adjacent community
Deliver service in the community through engagement with other community agencies that provide disaster planning, mitigation and response
Willingness to become a local emergency responder in partnership with the American Red Cross.
Ability to serve all required State/National Service Days (MLK Day, Caesar Chavez, 9/11 Remembrance).
Community Outreach:
Strengthening partnerships with local community-based organizations and internal programs.
Attend events and training on behalf of partner-site and AmeriCorps programs.
Conduct surveys and other measurable activities.
Community Education:
Members will lead presentations and outreach efforts through canvassing, and partnerships with local
nonprofits for the purpose of measurable community behavioral changes in preparedness.
Disaster Response:
As needed, Members will deploy to disasters and provide appropriate assistance to the organization(s)
directly managing the disaster response. Deployments will happen on very short notice with a duration of up to two weeks.
After each disaster deployment, members and staff will debrief in order to articulate lessons learned and improve policies and procedures for future disaster responses.
Qualifications:
Age 18 years or older
U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
Live locally to nonprofit partner for day to-day service
Two years professional or volunteer experience (in related fields), or Bachelor’s Degree
Ability to potentially serve evenings and weekends when needed
Ability to deploy on short notice anywhere in California for disaster response four times yearly for up to two weeks each
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Zoom, G Suite and willingness to learn
Due to recurring access or episodic access to vulnerable populations, service in this role is contingent on the following checks: DOJ, FBI and National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW), and COVID-19 testing or proof of COVID vaccination prior to service.
Candidates must also possess a personal automobile, a current California driver’s license and maintain valid automobile insurance. Availability to meet ongoing requirements.

Due to the nature of sudden and unpredictable emergency responses, we discourage school enrollment while serving as AmeriCorps members.
All Members must maintain the expected hours of service of 40 hours per week for the duration of
their contract. Service hours are typically, Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm and weekends when
needed.
