Description:
Looking for a compassionate, outgoing support worker to assist an adult on the autism spectrum in Arcata. This role blends in-home support with community engagement, including passing out flyers, visiting local businesses, and encouraging friendship-building through Humboldt Friends, a local inclusion project.
About the Role:
Part-time role working one-on-one with the client, helping maintain daily structure and reducing isolation while honoring sensory and communication needs. This job includes engaging with the public to spread awareness about Humboldt Friends while protecting privacy and complying with HIPAA. Staff may be asked to facilitate hosting guests and meet-ups.
Requirements:
Must live in Arcata and have an Arcata address.
Must have a reliable car and valid driver’s license.
18+ with ability to pass an FBI/DOJ Live Scan Background check (cost is approximately $80).
Prior experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities or autism.
Outgoing and socially fluent—you enjoy talking to strangers in a positive way.
Respectful of neurodivergent communication and routine needs.
Able to stay grounded in dynamic or sensory-rich environments.
Shift Options:
4-hour or 8-hour shifts
Shifts available 7 days a week, starting at 9am, 1pm, and 5pm
Part-Time starting at 2-3 shifts per week, with possibility to increase shifts over time
Key Duties:
Maintain calm, structured routines.
Support social outings and nature-based activities.
Represent Humboldt Friends to the public (businesses, events, flyers).
Help create and foster inclusive friendships in the community.
Respect personal boundaries, emotional needs, and protected health information.
Ensure HIPAA-compliant conduct at all times (training provided).
Pay & Benefits:
$30/hour
$0.67 per mile reimbursement for miles driven on the clock
