JOB SUMMARY

Provide for the safety and engagement of campers during Big Lagoon’s Coastal Camp. Lead K-8 students in various summer camp activities at Big Lagoon Elementary School. Responsibilities include facilitating hikes, singing songs, canoeing, games, and acting ridiculous on frequent occasions.

DIRECTING AUTHORITY

The employee is responsible to the Big Lagoon Union Elementary School Environmental Educator, who shall evaluate the employee.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

- Act as director in the director’s absence

- Manage medications and maintain a log of medications for campers on site

- Stay on site during overnights and act as main contact for parents during Camp Director’s absence

- Provide support for Lead Counselors throughout the day by providing breaks and troubleshooting

- Identify elements of camp operations that require attention and creatively address those issues

- Work alongside director to create schedules

- Drive a shuttle van to move campers between activity sites

- Lead songs and outdoor games

- Provide for protection and safety of all campers

- Communicate with parents and staff in a professional manner

- Create a safe, equitable, and inclusive learning environment for campers to have a positive outdoor experience

- Manage a small garden

- Lead hikes up to 6 miles in length through scenic State and National Parks

- Lead tidepooling adventures

- Activity preparation and clean up

- Camp setup and take down

- Facilitate meals and help in the kitchen

- Clean camp to ensure a safe healthy environment for students.

QUALIFICATIONS

- College graduate

- First Aid Certified

- WFA/WFR Preferred

- Lifeguard Certification preferred

- Three years experience working in camp settings

- Enthusiasm for summer camp

- Fingerprint clearance through the California Department of Justice records

- TB testing upon employment

KNOWLEDGE OF:

- Summer camp operations

- Summer camp activities, songs, and skits

- Positive discipline strategies

- Local Native American People and Culture

- Outdoor leadership

- Local flora and fauna

- Outdoor water recreation safety and best practices

- First aid

ABILITY TO:

- Manage difficult situations with tact and professionalism

- Work closely with a small team

- Manage students in an outdoor setting

- Maintain a safe, respectful, and responsible culture amongst the campers

EDUCATION:

College education with preference given to those currently enrolled in the natural sciences and environmental education fields.

SALARY & WORK YEAR

Lead Counselors will receive $25/hour. Employment dates last from July through August. Not to exceed 350 hours.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Some degree of physical ability is required of this position. Over time, the physical demands of any position are subject to change. Depending on the particular assignment, the Lead Counselor could be expected to:

- Stand, sit, and/or move about for sustained periods

- Hike up to 7 miles in varied terrain

- Bend at the waist and reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally

- Lift and carry weights up to 40 pounds

- Effectively and articulately communicate by verbal, auditory, and written means

- Rely on clarity of vision at varying distances
