Bright Futures for Youth (BFFY) is providing a paid internship through September 30, 2024 as a Barista for the NEO Youth Center Café as part of its grant-funded BFFY Youth JobCorp program. This program targets youth ages 16-30 that may have experienced barriers to employment and are needing on-the-job training, coaching and supports to obtain the job skills necessary to be sustainably employed.

Job Purpose:

Bright Futures for Youth (BFFY) is providing a paid internship for the role of Café Barista. This position is an integral part of our Kitchen and Nutrition Program team. The position focuses on providing excellent customer service, making café beverages, and participation in all roles of café service and procedures. The Café Barista will work directly with the Kitchen and Nutrition Program Manager and NEO Youth Center staff to create and maintain the intended vision for the Youth Center Café at Bright Futures for Youth, as well as learning and promoting program services. This role will require a CA ServSafe Food Handler’s Certification, which is included in the training for the internship.

Previous barista and food service experience is desired. This is a part-time, non-exempt internship for 25 hours per week through September 30, 2024, and is trained and supervised by the Kitchen and Nutrition Program Manager.

Café Barista Duties and Responsibilities to Learn and Grow:

Opening and closing the Café, including but not limited to: setting up brewing equipment for daily use; cleaning brewing equipment at end of shift; cleaning dishes at kitchen and returning all items back to Café space for next service.

Assisting with food preparation, cleaning, organization, and inventory in the Café and kitchen.

Greeting all guests in a welcoming manner as they approach the counter.

Preparing and serving beverages while also participating in all Café roles to maintain procedures for food service; supporting volunteers and other kitchen staff to facilitate efficiency and food safety.

Communicating daily as a liaison between Youth Center staff, Kitchen Program staff, and volunteers to provide great service, food, and drinks while contributing to a positive working environment.

Receiving and accurately processing donation payments when necessary.

Consistency in cleanliness of working areas; upholding compliance with health and safety regulations.

Identifying repair or maintenance needs as necessary.

Qualifications:

Previous hands-on experience with brewing equipment as a barista or in a food service role is preferred.

Basic knowledge of how to prepare espresso, coffees, tea, smoothies, and other blended drinks.

A positive, growth mindset and desire to learn.

Excellent communication and customer service skills for positive interactions with customers, coworkers, and managers; skills for managing miscommunication or conflict.

Ability to work well on a team and independently. Teamwork-oriented to successfully operate the Café and serve our youth population.

Attention to detail and effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to lift up to 50lbs safely and to stand for extended periods.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and switch between tasks as needed.

Basic math and reading skills.

Must acquire and maintain a current ServSafe food handlers’ certification.

Because this is a grant-funded internship, the age requirement of the Café Barista intern is between the ages of 16 and 30.

Compensation

This is a 25-29 hour/week position with a pay range of $18/hour

Paid Time Off with PTO accrual starting first day of work
