Job Summary

The Aerospace Corporation's Innovation Lab, iLab, tackles the hardest problems facing the space enterprise. Through a portfolio of 100+ R&D and innovation projects, we develop ideas and incubate them into proof-of-concept or prototype innovations for space. We act as an internal incubator of innovative ideas that range from AI and gaming platforms to modular SmallSats and robotic space missions. We are looking for those with bold ideas, a passion for turning them into reality, and a collaborative spirit to help chart the future of space innovation.

The Innovation Lab is a part of the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and manages Research & Development (R&D) investment portfolios associated with bringing transformative or disruptive technologies to maturity. As the Assistant Principal Director, Innovation Lab, you will help drive execution of our current portfolio of programs, and to provide strategic vision in support of creating new, effective, programs to further fulfill our mission. This position will be a hybrid work model with various nationwide locations available as well as remote consideration.

What You'll Be Doing
  • You will work with the iLab Principal Director to translate corporate strategic intent into actionable strategies and plans
  • S/he will work with senior management on communicating the value of Aerospace technical products and activities
  • Providing strategy development and execution management support for multiple R&D portfolios spanning ideation through technology maturation
  • You will provide strategy development and execution management support for multiple programs centered on increasing internal and external collaboration and innovation
  • S/he will work with key partners on pilot projects to experiment with business-model and internal-process innovation
  • Mentoring corporation staff to adopt and implement innovation and collaboration processes
  • You will lead transition activities for technologies, techniques, and products developed within the iLab R&D portfolios
  • Participating in corporation technology transfer and technology transition process improvement
  • Manage and lead the technical communication process for the Board of Trustees Technical Committee

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent
  • Typically, (12) years of applicable professional or educational experience is required
  • Experience in the space systems field
  • Ability to support project transition
  • Exceptional ability to mentor, create teams-of-teams, and collaborate
  • Ability to adjust strategy to enable cross-corporation partnerships
  • Ability to translate and extend strategic intent to engage a broader audience
  • Comfort with ambiguity, and ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving internal corporate and customer environment
  • Willingness to travel (approx. once/month) and to work off-business hours to support customer needs
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • PhD in a STEM field or equivalent
  • Direct experience conducting and managing R&D projects
  • Direct experience in technology transfer
  • Experience with Aerospace mission assurance functions, FFRDC operations, and company business processes
  • Proven experience in managing dynamic budgets and project allocations

Grade-Based Pay Range

(Min - Mid - Max)$162,000 - $181,000 - $220,000
