Deer Creek Resources, a subsidiary of Firestorm Wildland Fire Suppression, Inc., is seeking a Biological Monitor for 14-day rotations on wildfire fuel reduction projects. Qualified candidates with experience as Biological Technicians, Botanists, or Biologists are encouraged to apply.

Location: Central Coast, California
Overview: Deer Creek Resources seeks a Biological Monitor for planned California Vegetation Treatment Program (CalVTP) funded vegetation treatment projects in the Central Coast region of California. Deer Creek Resources is based in Chico and performs similar work throughout the state.
Position Description: Monitors will work in advance of tree-falling and swamper crews to conduct data review and reconnaissance-level surveys of the work area for species and habitats of interest, to identify and document sensitive resources and assess the suitability of habitat for special-status plant and animal species. Our monitoring crew will then train all workers and supervisors, prior to beginning fuels treatment projects, on the appropriate work practices to effectively implement mitigation measures and to comply with environmental laws and regulations. Lead monitors will also be required to immediately contact the appropriate agencies if any wildlife protected by the California (or Federal) Endangered Species Act if encountered and cannot leave the site on its own (without being handled).
Requirements: Qualified candidates would hold a wildlife biology, botany, ecology, forestry, or other relevant degree from an accredited university and meet the following requirements:
Be knowledgeable in relevant species and ecology
Possess the ability to correctly identify relevant species and habitats
Have field survey experience and be knowledgeable about survey protocols
Be knowledgeable about state and federal laws regarding the protection of special-status species
Have experience with California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) and Biogeographic Information and Observation System (BIOS)
Preferred candidates will be able to meticulously document bird nests and territories as well as have experience conducting field studies involving birds, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, and plants. Competitive candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively in rapid-paced, high-stress environments, possess knowledge of laws pertaining to environmental resource protection, and be proficient in Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.
Compensation: Approximately $50 per hour, plus per diem and lodging for on-site field surveys
