Golf Course Superintendent

SUMMARY

Oversee the maintenance of the golf course (or courses) and ensures that turfgrass is repaired and maintained to established standards. Works near moving mechanical parts, fumes and/or airborne particles. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Noise level is moderate.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Ensures all company policies and procedures are followed including compliance with government regulations. Ensures that they and all associates obtain proper training and/or licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations. Communicates all real or perceived environmental concerns.

Manages department members that may include, but is not limited to: Horticulturist, Crew leaders, Greenskeepers, Irrigation Technicians, Chemical Applications, and Landscapers.

Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new associate. Develops ongoing training programs.

Conducts staff meetings with subordinates.

Directs the maintenance and construction of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.

On occasion, procures supplies and materials within budgetary limitations.

On occasion, keep records of annual maintenance activities and costs.

Ensures all company policies and procedures are followed including compliance with government regulations.

Supervises the planting and cultural practices involved in growing various turfgrass, trees and ornamental plants.

Ensures proper mixing, calibration, and application of all chemical/fertilizers used on the course.

Communicates any changes or new policies and procedures to the department.

Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.

Skills/ Abilities

Must possess good verbal and written skills.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

The ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of the organization.

Prepare technical data, bidding, project work, alterations, and repairs for the property.

Able to create Microsoft Excel formulas and spreadsheets.

Ability to apply algebra and geometry math skills.

Education/Experience:

High School or equivalent education required.

Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Degree preference in agronomy/ horticulture/ plant/soil science).

Pesticide Application License.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to physically reach, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 100 pounds.

Must be able to work under variable temperature conditions (extreme heat or cold, indoors/outdoors).

Must be able to work around chemicals, dust, fumes and/or odor hazards.

Must be able to work in extreme temperatures, such as freezers (-10F) and boiler rooms (+100F) possibly for one hour or more.
